timing off?

just replaced timing belt and i have a high idle, about 1600-2000 rpm. When i shut the car off it really shuts down hard and shutters the entire engine. could cam timing be off or base timing? i adjusted the cam angle sensor and the more i retard the higher the idle and the better the car runs, more i advance = lower idle and no power at all. thanks alot -ted

Take you timing belt cover and check all of the marks.
Sometimes when you put on the hydraulic tensioner, it can make keeping it lined up difficult.(at least it did for me)

the marks align at the middle ( where intake and exhasut cams are closest... but if i use a straight edge, all 4 marks do not align perfectly, they are off slightly

Is there any way you can use a timing light to check it out?

i can do that, i will check base timing and get back. a guy at my dads shop said it was timed right, but i dont know why the idle is so high. and i dont want to advance it too much on the cam sensor to melt a piston or sometihng
