the guy i hired to relace all my belts messed up. i looked at the timing marks with a friend through the little window there......not good. i'm not too mechanically inclined so bear with me. the upper timing marks are supposed to be at the 3 & 9 o'clock position side by side of course. well mine, let's say the right will be at 9 and so will the left. i've found someone to fix the problem, but should I be worried about bent valves, replacing the head, what?

You may need to just turn it over a few more times, sometimes it takes like 7 turns to get the marks to all line up. Was the car running bad like it was out of time or anything?

You can spin it all you want but it wont change how the marks line up on the cam gears. They both spin at the same speed so the marks wont change in relation to each other.

Keep in mind that this is not a 4G63.

I know that but it still doesnt make a difference in the way the cams turn. Both cam gears are still the same size on the 420 so they will turn the same speed. Actually, how many dohc engines have you seen that have the cams turn at different speeds from each other? None I hope.

first of all i don't know what a dowel pin is or where they would be. the car starts and runs, but she runs like shit. timing is off. when i drove it home a week & a half ago, she shut off five times at red lights. so again, should i be worried about bent valves, replacing the head, etc.?

Check this site out, it should explain everything you would need to check for the timing to be correct. Actually this fully explains how to replace the timing belt yourself.

On the 2g N/T, there are dowel pins, and I had to get help on here to get it right. The cam bolts are covering the pins, so you cannot see them without removing the bolts. With the bolts removed, and the crank marks lined up, look at the timing marks and dowel pins on the cams, the intake dowel pin should be at 6 o'clock, and the exhaust shouldbe at 12. If they are both at 12 or 6, the timing is off.

The dowel pins are pins in the cams that line the cam gears up.

I was talking about the timing marks on the front case (if the 420 even has a front case, I have no idea)
