I have a 95 TSI AWD with a 6 bolt swap and balance shafts removed.... ran perfectly until about a week ago when I started to get a knock on the #3 piston (possibly the valve knocking... not too sure). A few days later the knock went away for about 10 mins of driving at low boost... then the car lost power and stalled... car would not start back up. Had car towed home.. just got a chance to look at the engine, has good spark, seems to have good compression ( i dont currently have a tester), after looking at the timing marks on the cams and the crankshaft and oil sprockets all the timing marks are in different positions... none of them line up at all! Also the timing belt appears to have a small amount of motor oil on it... in fact the whole side of the engine has a small amount of oil on it from just below the cams down to the oil pan... why and where is it coming from, any one know? I realize this cant be good, any suggestions on how to fix the timing and/ or what could be broken inside the engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Definitely test compression instead of assuming. I assume you turned it over a good number of times and nothing would line up. How far is it off? The only thing below the cams that can leak oil is the headgasket or the top of the oil pump cover. You'll have to take the timing belt off to time it again. You may also end up taking the head off if it's the hg.

Ok got the timing all lined up... car still wont start. Checked all four plugs good spark from all four. Strong gas smell from all four cylinders so im assuming it has fuel. Why wont the car start????

I am going to borrow a compression tester from a friend this week... I also realized that there is a small amount of oil in my coolant resivoir... could this be from a bad hg?

oil in the coolant, bad head gasket can put coolant in the oil (or so I heard). I know the coolant into oil is HG related. :thumbdown :thumbdown

the oil can be from your cam seals too, make sure you fix that oil leak because oil on the timing belt is bent valves in the making.
