I am Replacing my timing belt after doing major engine work to my Eclipse Gsx. When i get my timing belt on there is slack in the side with the oil pump/idler pulley, and when the tensioner takes up the slack the oil pump falls out of phase. It seems to me that the balance shafts must be out of phase and that is allowing my oil pump to spin so freely. According to the Haynes Manual there is a a plug in the block with a hole that u can stick a screwdriver in it to see if ur balance shafts are out of phase. Any Help would be appricated and i would also like to know where that stubborn plug is! :dsm:

There was a thread on this site that would help you but for some reason more and more threads are turning up missing or getting edited of usual information.

Lets see if i can remember how to help you out. Intake cam gets set right on and the crank, oil pump sprocket is going to get set one tooth off in the opposite direction is spins when tensioned. The exhaust cam gets set one tooth off going clockwise. Then when tensioned and a few spins. It will all pull straight may take you a few tries. Also don't leave any slack on the side with the oil pump. I remember seeing someone state this method before and it worked for me. Guess the good threads get deleted or edited

Sorry, but no.

1) start putting the belt on the exhaust cam and put a binder clip or the sort on it.
2) line up both cam gears so the marks are aligned...ALIGNED.
3) put the belt on the intake cam, and oh...make sure the marks are ALIGNED.
4) clip a binder clip on that one as well, and pull it around the idler pulley. Then put the oil pump gear marking strait up and let it fall. If it falls toward the mark on the case, then its in phase, if not, then turn it once and try again.
5) pull the belt tight enough so all the teeth are matching the gear (it should line up perfectly, if not, then something moved... see steps 1-4)
6) line up the crank and pull the teeth over the gear (again, this should match the marker)
7) throw it around the tensioner, loosen, have a beer... or coke.. or whatever.

I installed mine in the same method as mitsugsx95 explained, and it came out dead on.

If you are by yourself it makes it a little more difficult. Try to grab an extra set of hands for a few minutes, it will make it much much easier!
