Hello all, im thinking of having the timing belt replaced on my 1992 talon (n/t), but i have a couple of questions i wanted to run by you guys (by the way, i have no idea how to do it myself, so i was just going to take it in). Anyway

1. What exactly should i get replaced while im there? My main concern is the timing belt itself, obviously, but i also heard that other parts can seize up and break the timing belt, and some have even said that the majority of the time the timing belt breaks, its because ANOTHER part fails that is connected to the timing belt.

2. Water pump, yay or nay?

3. Ive had the car for about 4 or 5 years (i really dont remember) but have only driven it about 10k miles, if that. Right now its at about 160k total. I went out and looked at the timing belt, and it looks fine, barring the infamous oil pan bolt ridge on it. I guess my question is: do i really NEED a new timing belt? I have no clue what the mileage on the belt is either.

4. Anyone live around the Dallas/East Texas area that would be willing to come do it (obviously id pay you and supply the parts)?

Like i said, i am not nearly handy enough to change a timing belt myself. I only have basic tools as well, just a regular toolkit.

In wasnt handy at all when i did my first one but the manual helped me through it, replace all in question since your there or youll be fixing what should have been or replaced while you were there a lesson i learned after the fact. It really isnt too bad just make sure your follow the steps as with anything else youll be amazed at what you can do if you just take your time, and ask questions.

I would be more open to the concept of doing it myself if i knew i had the necessary parts. I know, for example, that the heat shield on mine is rusted and absolutely impossible to get off without some sort of pressurized tool or cavalcade of burly Russian teenagers. As it is, i view doing the timing belt myself as as much of a risk, if not greater, as just leaving it be.

Don't let them replace the belts, pulleys or tensioner with cheap parts store crap! Go with OEM or at least Gates!!!

The water pump is not timing belt driven, but you might as well have them change it while they're in there. The OEM water pump is about $175, so I'm going with a Gates one myself for about $60.

There are vendors who sell timing kits (JNZ, MAP, STM)
You might want to ask if your mechanic of choice will install a kit if you supply the parts.

Keep in mind that they probably won't warranty the job if you supply parts. But it's better to have OEM parts that won't fail and wreck your motor than warrantied crap!

I don't think you could pay me large sums of money to let someone work on my car!

Me neither and I never will ive at least attemped doing everything from paint, wiring, engine building and onto tuning, at least try it worse that can happen is you learn something but all of us might not have spare cars do drive around while the dsm Is down. Best thing its your own car, if you mess it up its yours.
