timing belt not broken but wont turn!

ok well i thought my timing belt broke but when i took the cover off it was still in place and in good condition. But when i try to start the car the belt only moves about an ince or so and gets stuck. all my other belts move. any ideas what the problem is? i talked to my mechanic and he said the timing belt should be replaced and that my valves have a chance of not being bent. is this true? or do i need a new head?
 
If all the other belts are turning, the only thing that I can think of is the possibility that the ribs on the belt, at the crankshaft sprocket, are gone or the belt has lost tension. I would remove the lower timing cover and take a look to see if this sprocket is turning and if the belt is slipping. In any case I suspect that the valves are bent.
 
with it NOT moving? Uh..oops? Have you tried moving the crank by hand with a 1/2 wrench and seeing if you can hear any metal on metal up top? Or better yet FEEL metal hitting metal? You should be able to tell it is metal hitting metal....also if you have a telescoping mirror you may be able to put it down a spark plug well when turning it and see if somehting is hitting...also pull the plugs and look at the tops of the pistons for dents or gouges. That is a good indication of a problem.

They don't always break, but the crank sprocket shears the teeth off.

Your mechanic is speaking out of the wrong orifice.

yeh...new heads are awesome and if the bottom end has miles on it, that show wear and old age. I would dig in and replace rod and main bearings, new rings and arp stud everything. It's the best way to go. And of course a new headgasket. I hate people who use there old ones over again and 25 miles on the rebuild. Ah, my valve seals are leaking or ahhhh no compression, just rebuilt!.

Mabey your crank pully broke apart. That happened to me once and when it came apart it hit the timing belt and made the car skip time and it bent all my valves and i only had the car back for 2 weeks before this happened cause i had just had the motor rebuilt. So there went another 1,000 dollars down the drain.
