What timing belt kits do you people use? what do you recommend? Who used autozones??

im replacing that and the tensioners precautionary. thanks

personaly if you have the extra cash get a kelar timing belt. I have a tensioner from autozone and ive had no problems. I also have new pullys from advanced aut and have not had any problems with them either. My biggest suggestion to you is not to go cheap on timing belt parts. It is the life line of the car!!!!!!!!!

I'd go Mitsu OEM all the way for reliability (especially if you've got a good parts guy at your local dealership). The fancy kevlar belts are pretty, but unless you get a really good deal or are dead set on one of them, the stock Mitsu belt is the way to go. That said, I've gotten one of the kevlar belts at a stock belt price second hand before from a guy who bought a lot of goodies & then didn't do the build. No point in turning your nose up at one when you'd pay the same for the stocker! :D

I have used Mitsu OEM from a dealership only to receive an AISIN brand waterpump who's bearing started to fail with about 15k miles on it.

I then bought from PartsDinosaur, Phoenix, Arizona, wholesale engine parts and kits and saved myself $100 or so. I have about 8k on them with no complaints as of yet.

If you are going to go through the effort of replacing the timing belt, due yourself a huge favor and do all the appropriate maintance aswell.
* Balance Shaft Belt
* Balance Shaft Tensioner Pulley
* Timing Belt
* Timing Belt Idler Pulley
* Timing Belt Tensioner Pulley
* Timing Belt Tensioner (hydraulic tensioner) -- important to replace
* Water Pump <-- you already removed everything needed inorder to get to the water pump as part of timing belt job. Go the extra step.
* A/C Accessory Belt
* Power Steering Pump Accessory Belt
* Altenator/Water pump Accessory Belt
* Thermostat <- you have to drain the fluids anyways to replace the water pump.
* Fuel Filter <- as part of the 60k maintance.

Edit: Also, its a great idea to have the proper tools for the job. I Purchased these tools:
Miller MD998768 Timing Belt tool
Miller MD998738 Timing Belt Tensioner install tool.

I had great communication with the Ebay seller "chbuzz" who sold me then. He didn't have them for sale on Ebay when I wanted them, so I sent him an email via Ebay and he within the hour posted an ebay add for me to purchase them. He then had them in the mail the next day, and refunded shipping for the joint purchase. So in my oppinion he is a good seller to get them from. Other's may have equally good oppinions on where to buy them from.

Says the guy with an adv. auto tensioner :tease:

Great advice here. Although your bill just went from $70 to about ~$250 or so, it's much better than spending $1000 for a head replacement later down the line ;)

I've got to second the dealings with "chbuzz"; he also sells some other tools that come in handy on these engines (like the crank holding "wrench" for lack of a better term). Every tool I've picked up from him has been new and come in handy more frequently than you would expect. One word of warning: once your DSM buddies find out that you've got the tools, expect to do a lot more timing belt jobs! LOL

In fact I just completed putting my 2g GSX back together yesterday from timing belt slipped that bent all 16 valves. I replace the timing belt and the balance shaft belt from Auto Zone Duralast brand yesterday and it seems to work fine.

I am using it on my 1G GSX as well and the car still running with big 16g/NX wet kit.

when i did this last year... i had about 220.00 in parts... was a dayco belt and i forget the type of tensioner pulleys... not to bad considering this is done every 60K... you'll net up that much in oil a year if you use the good stuff..
