I'm about to replace my timing belt/water pump - I'm curious about a few things - I have 95 Talon ESi with 133,xxx miles, and some of the kits say that they're regular for talons etc, and some list this :

Engine - Chassis:
2.0L, 4 Cylinder GAS, FI, VIN "Y": ESI

Not sure if that means its a special type of ESI?

Also - I'm looking for good brands, some say Gates/Conti not sure what to go for, looking for just a little assistance in looking for a good kit for the parts I need. I believe I need:

- Timing Belt Tensioner
- Tensioner Pulley
- Idler Pulley
- Timing Belt
- Balance Shaft Belt (not sure what this is..)?

This is the site I'm looking at now:

http://www2.alloemcarparts.com/part...A&part=Timing Belt Kit&returnurl=null&dp=true

If you all have advice for finding these parts (good brands, prices) :) that'd be awesome - at the moment I'm looking at several sites and what they offer, but if know of any sites that offer good kits at good prices, please let me know!

OEM always. Gates is basically OEM but I would still stick with the stock belt and components.

Several people have had good results with the Continental belts, although I am a OEM/dealer kind of guy on my TB parts.

With that said you should replace the timing belt, balance belt, tensioner, 2 tensioner pulleys, idler pulley, water pump, 2 cam seals, balance shaft seal, crank seal, and oil pump seal. Check condition of crank pulley.

Now would be a good time to check the condition of the valve stem seals as removing the head is simpler during a TB job if needed.

Radiator hoses, heater hoses, all the misc jumper hoses spread over engine. Fuel filter.

edit...oops I see your N/T...sorry I am not as familiar with an N/T so someone else will have to chime in on weither or not it has a balance shaft with the corresponding belt, tensioner pulley and seal.

I'll keep tossing this in, it may not affect many people but check the cast tensioner arm to make sure the tensioner rod hasn't worn a big divot there, new arm is cheap and makes sure the rod extension measurement is correct.

I have seen you mention this a couple of time and keep forgeting about it myself. Good thing to check the condition of though.

I was doing the timing belt on my 97 camry last week and I noticed that Toyota puts a piece of hardened steel in the tensioner arm to prevent the divot from wearing in.

Actually I have noticed a lot of manufactors doing that lately as well.

I'm not sure about the balance shaft belt, I checked the VFAQ guide on changing the T-belt and didn't say anything about it, however, do N/T need it? I don't see anywhere it could go.

Looks like no counterbalancers. Only cams, and crank.

Change the water pump also as it too is driven off of the timing belt.

Unless it's not very old.

Good Luck

To answer your question about the Y in the VIN. That is your engine code and it shows that the engine is a 420A. That is the same engine used in all N/T, non-spyder, 2G DSMs. It is also used in the neon, but the neon has both a SOHC (different 8 character) and DOHC version. I am not too familiar with the N/Ts so can't help you too much when it comes to which kit you should get.

95 Eagle Talon ESI (N/T)
133, xxx miles

So for the timing belt job I just need to replace

-Idler Pulley
-Tensioner Pulley
-Timing Belt
-Waterpump

Is that it? I read some things on me needing to replace the Timing Belt Tensioner? Does that usually come with a pulley? Just trying to find out what I need to replace and that I don't end up with anything I do not need.

Thank you for help, just trying to clear it up.

http://www.vfaq.com/mods/timingbelt-2G-NT.html #6 toward the middle/bottom.

Tensioner, tensioner pulley, timing belt, idler pulley, water pump. All seperate items. I would replace the seals while you are in there, but that's just me.
