Well I was pulling into my parking lot and my Galant VR4 started to make a funny whirling and clunking noise. I pulled into my spot and turned off the car. I then turned it back on, so i could listen for the noise. It was coming from the timing belt cover. I shut off the car and popped the cover off. The timing belt was shredded. All over the belt there were little tears on the sides. Then on about 1/3 of the belt it was shredded in half. But it never broke, or it doesn't look like it jumped any teeth.
Do you think that the valves should be fine? If so, my car has 84,500 miles on it. What should be on my replacment list?

Was the car running funny becides the noise? when a timing belt brakes, the pistons come up and hit the valve heads, it is one heck of a racket!! if you are in any way leary, you are going to have the timing belt off, there arent but another 15 minuites worth of work to get the head off, just add 100 more dollars for a valve cover gasket, head gasket and torque to yield head bolts, but if it wasnt running poorly and you heard no knocking noises, chances are you are ok..

Replace idler pulley, tensioner pulley, hydraulic tension adjuster, balance shaft belt and balance shaft tensioner. Check your t-belt cover. Sometimes chunks of plastic get broken off and damage timing belt.
Make sure your B-shaft spins freely, as well as your oil pump, before you put new belt on. Once you put it on, check compression before you put everything else together. That will show if you have bent valves.

+1 on all the above, and make sure that you don't get a crap alternator belt.

I bought an "all in one" type deal online, and the belt I got was garbage. I had put 10k miles on it before it shredded teeth and creamed my valves.

After I replaced my valves (only 4 valves got bent, thankfully) I decided to not screw around anymore and bought a kevlar timing belt off machV.com. Didn't have any more problems afterwards.

Also make sure that there are no loose bolts down in the oil pump area. Sounds stupid but my friend had a bolt petruding someone where in his oil pump area which shreaded his timing belt.

I'm about to order the parts that i need. But if I'm going to end up doing the BSE should I still order a BS belt and BS tensioner?

Also I'm pretty sure the valves did not bend. If i wanted to I could start the car and it would run fine. Although I'm not going to do that, I'm still going to check compression.
