Having a strange issue where car has this horrible tick but only under boost. Can feather the pedal and the noise won't occur but you hit it and it immediately ticks/knocks. Loss of power aswell- but again only in boost. Should I replace my turbo or could it be lifters? Hoping it's nothing major. Will go into a state of misfire after the boost tries to kick in then levels back out if you don't hit boost at all. Just want the old girl running good again aha

Please fill out a vehicle profile so we know what car/mods you are working with.

Do you have any way to take a data log?
Really sorry - first ever post. Ill do an update on it as soon as I'm home.

I bought the car from a fellow who really didn't know much about it. I know it's got 650cc FIC injectors , a T3 (not sure of brand, likely an ebay turbo) big intercooler, yada yada. I've been seeing people talk about logging the cars behaviour. Do I need a laptop and an obd2 cord for it? Again, sorry if these are dumb questions.

Sounds like an exhaust leak in the video.
Really hoping that's all it is. Funny this is - the car is missing 2 nuts or studs from the passenger side of the exhaust manifold. Really hoping that's all it is! It wasn't an issue when I got the car but I also turned the turbo up to 12lbs. I'm going to do another once over on the manifold when I'm home. Is it possible to temporarily seal that side of the manifold just to see if this tick goes away?

Try to look thru the hole on the manifold and see if you can see threaded holes in the head or if the reason they are missing is because someone broke them off.

So you were correct! All the bottom manifold bolts were loose. Have a feeling the last owner just slapped it together to sell it. Got them all torqued down and the "knock" is totally gone. Still not getting full boost though so I have a feeling it's the 2 missing bolts. Will take a look at the head today and see if the holes are still usable or what's up there. They had some weird orange sealant around the manifold where the 2 bolts were missing. Is that just gasket maker? Thanks again for the help. Was really worried something serious was wrong aha

Sorry if I'm being a bother

- but where exactly do I make a vehicle profile? I was looking through the profile section last night and could not for the life of me figure it out.
No bother, check out these two threads. One for getting started on the forum, and one for starting the plan on how to get this car back on the road.

If you have gasket maker on your manifold gasket, I expect you’ll find broken studs that will need to be extracted and replaced.

While you’re in there, pull the air tube off of the turbo and make sure it’s not locked up/has excess play.

Awesome thank so much for the links! Made what I can for a vehicle profile (what I know about the car anyways). Will definitely be looking in to the thread on making a plan to get my car back to normal!

On the topic of my manifold - if studs need extracted, are they in their own little housing? Or do I need to worry about shavings getting in the head?

With any drilling situation, it’s best to be aware of where your shavings are going, but most of the studs just go into their own spots not open to anything behind them. I do believe that the lower middle stud opens to a coolant jacket- double check me on that. EDIT: it’s an oil galley that the bottom center stud runs into.

It would probably be best to remove the entire manifold to make this job go a little easier. Consider replacing all the nuts and studs since it has a history of coming loose, be prepared to replace the hardware for the turbo as well.

Awesome info. Thanks for everything!

The oil valley makes a ton of sense - explains the small oil leak in the lower center bolt before I tightened it up. Hoping there's nothing left of the studs in the head and they just never got around to replacing them. Time will tell, LOL.
