I just bought a 1995 Talon ESi a few days ago with a rebuilt motor and 25,000 miles on it. I was driving it around a small amount tonight (about 5 minutes) and when I got out I hear this ticking/knocking from the right passenger wheel area while the car was idling. I opened the hood and you can slightly hear it near the passenger wheel area, but no where else. It's also pretty noticeable from inside the car, but not while moving (I don't know if it goes away, or if I just can't hear it over the noise of the car). It's a constant ticking noise that happens about 3 times every two seconds.

I've searched around and haven't really anyone with the same exact question. Some people say that the belts, specifically the tensioner, make a ticking noise. If it was this belt, how would you stop it from ticking?

Thanks.

As odd as it may sound, check the connectors on the firewall near the vacuum lines. I had the same sounds and it turned out being a short in one of the connectors. Otherwise get a stethoscope and poke around in the engine bay.

Lol, there aren't any major connectors over near the passenger side on a "420a" that could make the noise he's describing. On the 420a's its common to have that ticking/squeak noise from that area, hell I put grease on the tensioner(witch was causing noise) and it does away for a while then out of the blue comes back. I need to just replace it, I've learn to get use to it. Makes my car sound like ass, even though it's in great condition running condition. Check to make sure you have power steering fluid. If you cut on your ac and it squeals it's either the tension or the compressor, if it's at idle and goes away when you drive then chances are it's the tensioner/belt itself or one of the pulley bearings taking a shit. If you had a lifter or a rod bearing gone bad you would notice as it gets worse while driving(most the time). Use a stethoscope as stated above to make sure no knocking/ticking is coming from your engine, then rule out the ps/ac area.

I can't really tell if it gets worse during driving, because the drivers side window assembly is F'ed up which causes it to be open at the back. Cabin noise is loud and echo-y because of that. I'll see about it tomorrow when I take it for a drive. It really didn't even make the noise that bad until driving it around for a bit and then leaving it in neutral.

I had the same noise on my Eclipse 420a, turned out that the alternator belt got damaged by a bad crank pulley. Replaced, fixed.

Could be a solution.

I had the same thing happen to my 420a. My problem was that the coolant overflow was off of its bracket and kept hitting the accessory belts. Hope this helps

Had the same problem on my 96 eclipse 420a.

Turned out to be the tensioner pulley. Pull it off and check it see what you got. I replaced mine and haven't had a problem since. Ive heard that some ppl even just remove the tensioner and get a smaller belt.

Also check your timing cover. Make sure theres not a loose timing cover bold and the plastic is hitting on the belt.

The noise you are hearing is probably the canister purge solenoid, it is located under the bumper cover. It is clicking open and closed mine satrter making the same noise when I filled it with too much gas. I think the raw fuel must have had some affect on the solenoid plunger.

Same problem I had turned out my alternator belt was going bad and tore off. Turns out my Harmonic Balncer (Crank pulley) Was oscilating and was off balanced.
Make sure your battery light stays off!!! bcuz if that alt. belt comes off, it'll throw a CEL also!!
