As the title states, my throwout bearing won't fit over the input shaft. I bought an Exedy OEM clutch kit, and this bearing came with it. Got another from Advance Auto which is identical, and of course, it won't fit either. I just got done ordering one from the Mitsubishi dearler by Part # MD749998. Should have it tomorrow. However, I think there's an issue with my input shaft. It's been a few years since I last did a clutch replacement, but I don't ever recall seeing the sleeve on the input shaft as in my pictures. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Looks as thought the sleeve is held on with adhesive of some sort. In addition to the set screw. What leads me to believe this sleeve doesn't belong here, is the original throwout bearing. I know it isn't the right one. New one on left, bad one on right.

I've been searching though ShopKey and can't find any useful info on this. :aha:

If by sleeve you mean the collar with the set screw, I guess I don't remember if it's there or not. The other big sleeve the shaft goes through is normal which is what the TO bearing rides on.

BTW always use the Mitsu TO bearing, it's the best - Exedy one is flimsy crap - (see http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=145088&d=1347556746) - notice the inner wall thickness difference as well as the Mitsu's more rounded PP fingers contact point? Also see attached pic.

Your old TO bearing is definately not Mitsu.
Here's how it should look assembled: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=87967&d=1223271832

I'll have my real Mitsu bearing tomorrow, thankfully. Good info. I don't see why these vendors and stores sell a bearing that doesn't fit the application. Pisses me off. If it weren't for this, I'd be driving my spyder by now.

Is that a collar with a set screw? It's definitely not original. Seems like the sleeve the TOB rides on got worn out and this was a quick and easy fix for it. Of course, that doesn't help explain why the TOBs you have now don't fit.

Here's some threads for reference to what I'm talking about; note that the 2G AWD transmissions had a replaceable sleeve and all other transmissions do not:

The sleeve has been repaired (most likely) and an over sized throw out bearing put in place.

Use the old throw out bearing since you'll play hell finding one that fits the sleeve.

This is a lot like sleeving a crank sealing surface.

I agree, this appears to be the case. Perhaps you can call previous owners to find out who repaired it to maybe get a handle on what TOB it is for replacement. Also check if that sleeve is still solidly attached (hopefully welded). So much for the Mitsu TOB ever fitting. Of course there's a small chance you may have problems with the old TOB contacting your new PP fingers exactly where it's supposed to (if the contact point is not exactly where the new PP was designed for because the old TOB is a different diameter). You may be better off replacing the bell housing in the long run.

I can't reach the previous owner anymore, I've tried. I do have the email invoice from when she had the trans worked on. I'll have to look at it when I get home. The sleeve appears to be glued on. No welds.

Take the old TOB to the parts store and match it up, then, depending on what you find, buy that one or order up an OEM version of it.

Really though, I don't like the idea of not knowing if that sleeve is going to fly apart on me, or whatever the case may be, but if the car needs to get driveable...

I know how it all works, but have just never seen the sleeve (also known as a quill), on a DSM input shaft before. Since starting this post, I found a sticker on my transmission stating that it has a retrofit TOB. Got a part number to use and a number to order from.

There is a "sleeve" (part number MD716349) on all of our transmissions.

That's NOT the part that is on the O/P's transmission.

The O/P has a sleeve with a collar and set screw.

The oem sleeve doesn't have that collar on it's base.
