I replaced my throttle body shaft seals today and after inspecting the throttle body I noticed a few things. First, the springs snap the throttle plate right back into position after opening it which is a good thing. But, if I open it all the way and let go as fast as I can. I can hear a creak and a slight vibration as it closes...still fast though. Once it's closed it seems to stick sometimes when I try to open it. It never sticks when I let it close itself from the open position though. I also accidentally put the shaft in so the screw heads are facing towards the intake manifold. The throttle plate still open the correct way and each side of the shaft is in its correct spot. Is this a problem? Should I open up the throttle body again?
 
I'll try loosening them tomorrow. Anyone with a throttle body want to see if they can replicate my problem on a known good tb?
 
I had the exact same issue as you this past weekend when I switched out the shaft seals on the 1G TB I was installing. When I would open it all the way, and let the throttle plate close, it would stick shut a bit. I was concerned, but then I tried the same thing on the 2G that I had just removed, and it did the same thing. Plus I was thinking, and in the real world it should never just snap back like that under no control as the throttle cable will always be putting some tension on it. And make sure the nuts on the the ends of the shaft arent too tight, as it will definitely not open and close correctly. I tightened mine down, then backed them off a half turn or so and that loosened everything up just enough to work freely.
 
1. Do not loosen the screws, in fact thread locker (red) should be used to avoid the screws from coming loose and enter your engine which it's known to do.

2. Did you install the plate backwards as well?

3. Since the thread is on the back side (IM side) of the shaft, installing the screws backwards means the plate is only held in place but not locked down so it's probably moving around a lil, you need to take it apart and re-do it, make sure the plate is installed right side up this time.

The plate is installed the right way. I labeled which way goes up and which side points toward the intercooler. Its just the shaft that is spun 180 degrees in the wrong direction. Let me clarify about the screws. The screws are installed the right way, its the SHAFT thats pointing the wrong direction. (Which makes the screw heads point toward the side of the intake manifold). And the above posters were talking about the nuts on each end of the throttle body that hold the shaft in place. Not the screws I don't think. =P

I see, then it's totally possible that the shaft nut is too tight pulling the shaft and plate to the butterfly side.
 
not to say your old man but i dont see how the bolts can be too tight. i mean the threads stop after a certain point.

this happened to me once rebuilding a throttle body. the plate has to be perfectly centered before it will close all the way. i know you think because the screws are in that it is centered but it might now be (like in my case). the end results were the throttle body plate hitting the side of the wall on the inside of the throttle body and it wasnt closing all the way unless you forced it. what i did was i took off the two screws that holds the throttle body plate on and made sure it was perfectly centered and lightly screwed the 2 screws back in. then i tested it a few times by opening and closing the throttle body a few times to make sure it wasnt moving any more. then i took 1 bolt out at a time and put loc tight on them and reinstalled them.

Ok, so one of the nuts that holds the shaft in place wasn't tight enough. That stopped the sticking when I tried to open the plate. I decided to completely redo the shaft seals (it always takes less time the second time ha) and the creaking stopped. Then it came back. I think the throttle position sensor is to blame for the creaking, so I'm just going to go ahead and put it on my car anyway.
