What is the motor vibration like(intensity) and at what rpm? I bought a 91 GSX back in July or so and it had lots of problems. The exhaust cam was off by 2 teeth(it actually ran pretty decent) and the rear balance shaft was almost 180deg off. Also the exhaust was a hackjob with out a flex tube. The car vibrated a good bit and i figured these were the problems. Long story short, i now have another shortblock w/ ross pistons and eagle H-beams(replaced the motor because of internal problems i found). I left the belt off the front balance shaft and used the stubby bypass shaft for the rear. I also installed new poly mounts all the way around and had a flex tube installed in the exhaust. The motor seems to run smooth(as in powercycles) with no miss. There is a vibration that is very annoying. Its at its worst between 2000 and 2500rpm. It makes the whole car buzz in those rpms(dash, sunroof, steering wheel, everything).
Is this normal? It does vibrate a good bit just idling and will cause the hood to vibrate and rattle rather loudly if the rev's are at or below 1K. I'm keeping the idle around 1100-1200 to keep it from being imbarassing!

sounds pretty normal to me. my car vibrates all the time it was kinda annoying at first , i have sense gotten used to it. now when i drive the old lady's tsi i feel kinda like im driving a caddy, that might have something to do w/ the factory 14yr old suspension on her car too tho

The vibration in your car is pretty normal that i know of. I've had two 1g's in both of them rattled just about everything inside the car at idle. I recently put custom made steel moter mounts in my Eclipse and it shook pretty bad (violently!) at first but after a while everything settled in and its not as bad anymore in its my daily driver. But embarrassing.. YES! Just try twisting the hood levelers* counter clockwise a couple turns to raise the hood a bit so it doesn't rattle as much.
After a while you'll start to notice new rattling sounds coming from the doors, dash etc. but most of them go away on their own.
Its just the sound of everything settling in its 'place'.

i have just the balance shafts removed and it vibrates a good bit at idle, other than that there its no noticable difference

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll just deal with it for now and see how it does. I only have 375mi on the new motor. Maybe it'll smooth out more once it gets more miles on it.
Thanks again...

I had a front mount go out on my n/t before and caused the entire dash to vibrate like mad. I replaced the mount with a polyurethane mount and the vibration got really worse after that. I am hoping to swap out front mounts with the factory rubber one to see if that would help. I didn't want to make the same mistake with my Tsi, but some people say the vibration is normal. The vibration got so bad that it loosened the screw on my rear view mirror and it fell off one day while I was idling at a stop light, no foolin! :talon:

Poly mounts and no balance shafts here and its crazy WTF I to have approx 360 miles on my fresh motor and i keep my idle around a grand and my car is gutted from everything behind the front seats. The vibrations are felt from idle to about 3000rpms. It feels like ai drive a solid mounted v-8 :rocks:

right on!

Polyurethane mounts are a little stiffer than stock mounts, therefore you'll feel vibrations from the motor a little bit more especially when you first put them on! No matter what you do you'll feel a vibration at low rpm's because the rotating mass becomes unbalanced, but If your annoyed enough by the vibration that your willing to disassemble the motor and have a machine shop balance everything if you haven't already, it will definately help take some of the vibration away! I had the machinist do it to my motor and it definately helps! :dsm:
