This maybe a stupid question but.......(engine related)

Can you replace our rods and pistons form the oil pan? I heard of people doing this on other cars so i wanted to know if i buy replacements, if i can do this. Of course there will be no overbore, so i am thinking this should be possible but i never analyzed our engines like that.

Also how hard is it to replace our oil pan gasket. Never done one before so i want to know what i am getting myself into if possible.

I've never tried this but I'm not sure how you would compress the rings to get the pistons back in. also would there be enough room to get the pistons and rods past the crank?
You may find it easier just to go ahead pull the head.

yeah, i am being told.... It was just a thought. I guess i need to find some locals to help me pull my engine and rebuild.

how in the hell would you hone it ? ya can rebuild it in the car.. but ya at least gota yank the head to.

No it can't be done. There is NO WAY to compress the rings from below the deck. You don't install Pistons from the bottom of a engine anyways. MUST remove head. If you remove the cylinder head....YES you can rebuild a engine while it is in the car. I did it once before on a 95' GSX (7bolt), and once you disturb a "Not Crankwalked" 7 bolt engine,. I believe that it is enevitable(sp) to happen.

I did a re-ring job on my prior GSX and wrecked it 120 miles after the rebuild....so did it CW?

I don't think so......but I DO think it would have.

The prob is. On a 7 bolt engine, when you drop the oil pan.....there is ONE big main cap which covers all of the main journals. On a 6 bolt there are individual caps. Someone correct me if I am wrong its been 2 yrs since I have seen the underside of a 4g63.

If your IN as deep as needing a rebuild..........I would personally buy a built to your specs short block and put your cylinder head on it and fly.

Also a good thing to do while you are that deep is remove rear balance shaft and remove belt from front shaft.
