So after a rear strut install (ebay) I'm considering stripping down my trunk..

It just seems like all that hassle with the plastic panels back there isn't worth the trouble.

Any one done this? I'm not trying to save weight or anything, I recently decided to go from tan interior to a gray black, but all my trunk panels are still tan.

Anyone with pictures of their strip trunk would be great

Thanks

You say you arent trying to save weight, so the remaining deciding factors (besides hassle) would be aesthetics, noise, protecting wiring/components from cargo, and resale value. Color should not be an issue since there are diy products for coloring your plastic interior trim. Noise is a consideration from both the pro and con sides. Interior trim can rattle if not properly fastened and secured, but installed properly, it does provide a small measure of sound deadening.

In the end, it is your call, though I think I will live with the hassle of panels myself.

+1

I can't stand when people ask me "why," but in this case I think more info would be needed. What is the purpose of this? What does the strut bar have to do with anything? If you are not trying to reduce weight, I just don't see any reason to remove anything from your car.

+2 I took my panelling out to do some strut work myself and ran into the same issue. My fiancé reminded me every time the hatch was open that it looked ugly. Wasn't too hard putting the panels back. Not worth the eyesore if it doesn't have function IMO. But it's your call, your car, good luck.

Well as far as resale value, I will never sale.

It just would seem I would get more trunk space by removing the trim, also I would add some sound deadened matting... I don't know just a thought.

The strut bar is not the reason for the stripped trunk, I just ended up considering it since installing it.

Although now with some of the points you guys made, I'm reconsidering my options.

Do you have two hands, a Phillips screw drivers, and 10 minutes? Why not take all the panels out see what you think? That's why I did last weekend and I'm still feeling it out.

can i have the pieces when you take them out?! the idiot who owned the car before me stripped my hatch, and i absolutely hate it.

unless its a track only car all a stripped trunk does is make the car look like you never finished putting it together. all the plastics together might weigh in at 5 pounds so its not like its gunna make you faster.

Unless you have a specific reason to gut it leave it in so the car looks clean and not half finished.

True dat! :rocks:

Could you snap some pictures of yours? Did you add any sounds mats?

I don't have any pictures and no I didn't add any sound mats. I mainly did it to make it easier to wire stuff up. I'm finishing my battery relocation, adding the mr2 power steering, and some other electronics that I want to be stored in the back trunk floor for weight distribution.

Mines stripped, including everything behind the front seats, headliner, and pillar trim pieces. My car doesn't have a sunroof, so I had to keep the pad that goes above the headliner to help with the reverb. I originally took the headliner out to redo it, since it was sagging, but decided I didn't care that much LOL. If its a daily driver, my advice is to leave your interior intact; you'll hate the exhaust reverb (unless you have the stock exhaust) and road noise coming from the rear wheels, especially if you have an AWD. And don't forget those noisy fuel pumps. My Wally 255 is crazy loud. Horrible for a daily driver LOL.

On the other hand, I stripped mine out to save weight, since the car is a weekend warrior/track car. Honestly, it doesn't see the track too often. I've pretty much gutted everything I didn't need/want, including radio and speakers, front bumper support, ABS, blah blah. Dropped a couple hundred pounds, according to a local scale...

Yeah I don't know what the 5 lbs thing is about. I swear there was like 75 lbs of crap I took out of mine. The rear washer resevoir and antennae were included in that but still. It was a pile of crap 3ft tall in my garage. Random metal brackets, seatbelts, speakers just a ton of stuff.

I know the OP isn't going to be THAT extreme but 5lbs is a little bit of an understatement. Unless it is literally only the 4 panels under the vanity shield thing. Then maybe it is less than 3-5 lbs...

From the front seats back my car has nothing except for speakers, the plastic, a battery box with my battery and a kill switch. I could tell a pretty significant difference in weight, and you don't have people trying to bum rides from you all the time.
