So i noticed today that the weather stripping (is that the right term?) near the front of the trunk has been torn pretty bad (see pic). Im wondering what can be done about it. I checked every junkyard in a 20-mile radius, and the few that had first-gen DSMs had the EXACT ripping problem that mine did. So what i did was bought one of the ones that was torn, which brings up my question.
1. What if i cut off the part on my weather stripping that's torn, then cut off an equal piece of the one i got from the junkyard, and placed that piece from the junkyard where the broken part of my old weather stripping was? basically id just be swapping out the ripped part of my current weather stripping for the "good" portion of the one from the junkyard
2. Alternatively, if anyone has any other cost-effective solutions, id be glad to hear them. I found what i think is the weather stripping on this site for about $60 (see other pic), does that look right, and is that indeed the weather stripping for the trunk? Most importantly, would it fit my 1992 Talon?

Actually, i think i found the trim for the trunk. Is it #16 in this diagram (Welt)? The naming on this site is really weird, and there arent many pictures, so its hard to tell.

You can go about it your way of fixing it, waste your time and have it leak again or just buy a new one, it's not that expensive..

Thats what i figured. I initially went to junkyards because i couldnt initially find it online, which is of course a way easier option. Can you look at the picture i posted in the second post and tell me if thats the part id need?

Okay, NOW i think i see the right diagram. Problem is, i dont know which of these options are what i need. Outer? Right? i dont understand, i just need the trim itself.

Can you show me where you found it? All of the places online that sell OEM Mitsu parts dont have the weatherstripping. In fact, they all seem to have the exact same inventory, each lacking #2 in the diagram i posted above (which i believe is the weather stripping i need).

Hmm, i dont seem to have any of those around where I live, just a few used car dealerships. Am i just SOL then? Doomed to have my car leak every time it rains? Why is this part so hard to find?

I found this in CAPS, could be the part number:
MB479285 TRIM, TAILGATE OPENIN BLACK
^^^ That looks like the trim which is a 3-sided U-shape

MB422914 WEATHERSTRIP, TAILGATE
^^^ this appears to be the trim which is a complete square.

Hopefully that helps, then you can call JNZ and see if he can find it.

I called JNZ a few days ago and they told me what everyone else did, "part has been discontinued, sorry." Its officially impossible to find new. So i went to a junkyard and spliced together two "good" parts of it with some weatherstripping sealant. Ill find out when it rains tomorrow if it worked. Could anyone guess if that would be causing a lot of water to be leaking into my trunk?
