I tried searching to see if anyone else was thinking of this, but couldn't find a thread.

I've looked at a few of these "turbo insulators" or turbo covers as they are called. It is some kind of thermal material used to wrap the turbo hotside in order to stop the heat from radiating to other parts of the engine bay. Has anyone used any of these or recommend any specifically?

The only reason I hesitate is that I've seen plenty of Mitsu turbos crack on the hotside. My E316g is ported on the hotside, and I am worried that the cover may make the housing more prone to cracking. I'd like to not replace the hotside if at all possible due to too much heat.

Any input would be helpful. Thanks.

I have a manifold blanket (covering the fp manifold and the turbine housing) and a jmf heat shield on my mirage also have the downpipe wrapped with header wrap. (every hot exhaust part is covered) Made a big difference in under-hood temps. Also haven't been killing alternators like i was before.

Also the e316g turbine has a high nickle content, really tough stuff and is much less likely to crack. You will be fine.

I think that over all the car just runs a little better since I wrapped it. I may spool a little faster not sure. It is hard to explain but the car runs and seems happier.

Are you able to monitor your oil temps as well? I was thinking another issue would be an increase in oil temps due to the heat transferring to the oil being fed to the turbo's center housing.

Can you post a pic of this "manifold blanket"?

Ya the manifold blanket is what I have. With the e316g, being so small I didn't need anything else. I was able to use it to cover both the manifold and the turbine housing all with 1 piece. Then I kind of kept it in place with the jmf heat shield stuffing it in between the clamps. doesn't look too bad either. Does a great job keeping down the under-hood heat.

I don't have oil temp gauge but I decided to clean up the engine bay last year and removed the coolant lines to the e316g all together. (oil only)

Later I thought that I broke the shaft on the turbo because the car fell on its face under boost. And you could spin the compressor wheel very very easily, (more so than my other bb turbo on other car. Thought the shaft broke) I took apart the exhaust manifold and turbo to look at it.. The turbo was fine and there was no cokeing in the oil return line at all. (turned out the afc came unplugged)

I assumed that the turbo was broke because I was running very high boost (35+) on e85 all the time for over a year and I was running the turbo without the coolant lines. But it was all in very good shape. (yay mobil 1)

Oil never smelled burnt either; and come out fairly clean too.

Any more questions?

I don't believe so. If the oil temps and cracking issues are not really present, then I suppose I might go to some sort of wrap/blanket. Thanks.

That is unless anyone else can think of other issues I'm not thinking of?
