Hi, All. I'm brand newb to the Forum. I'm in the process of doing an even swap deal with my project '86 Corvette coupe w/ 78K mi. for a project '95 Talon TSI AWD w/ 125K. Both cars are only a few hours of elbow grease away from being on the road again. Neither of us have seen the other's car in person, as we live about 250 miles apart.

The swap deal is a $3500 equivalent value. I've spoken with the gentleman several times, shared pics and project stories and we're about to seal the deal. First, though, I'd like to post the features and mods listed in the ad here on the forum and get your input. Here's the ad:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emerald Green, sunroof, 5spd manual, Brand new engine, megan racing short shifter, light weight aluminum flywheel, stage III clutch, K&N short ram intake,Big 16g EVO III turbocharger, TurboXS boost controller, walboro 255 fuel pump, DSM link (included with vehicle.), custom exhaust, threepod pillar, front mount intercooler, greddy type s BOV,about 125k on the body. needs a fender (tree branch) and a coil pack.
askin 3500.00 or best offer.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also have a full list of mods, new parts and work done on the car from the current owner of the Talon. I could post that info here if Forum members are interested in checking it out, posting your comments and letting me know if this Talon sounds like a good value for $3500. Thank you in advance for your feedback. :thumb:

well sounds like the car is a good trade and since im a dsmer i would say yes go for it...my question is does the car have upgraded fuel system and internals? of so sounds like all you need is a good tune n your in the 12's range. \

yes in my part :thumb:

spawn87,

Thanks for your feedback and your vote of confidence. Here's the list of mods, bolt-ons, etc. that the owner sent me. Sounds like a nice set-up. Tell me what you think:

· Newer dunlap sport SP2 tires

Issues
· The car currently does not run, I’ve done about 90% of the work all that is left is to remount and plug in the coil pack and spark control module and run all the vacuum lines. The motor does crank over just fine.
· The crank position sensor was removed by the previous owner and the car setup to run on just the cam sensor (the motor that was in it was pushing coolant and blew apart, I built the motor that’s in the car myself so I can vouch for the fact that everything was done correctly)
· Needs new pads and rotors all the way around

Between purchase price and other stuff there has been about $7,500 and a lot of time put into it and I just don’t want work on it anymore.

the last thing he said sounds like some b/s.... just needs the coil done and the vacume lines... why wouldnt he take the extra hour to do this himself if everything is ok and just sell it saying it runs fine. any dsmer wouldnt let 30 min of work stop them from hearing the car run. you know what i mean..... when i bought my n/t, the guy said that the only thing it needed was clutch fluid and a small tune. i knew he was b/sing me and that he had a blown clutch in it and i didnt even bother putting fluid in it before i did the clutch....something smells fishy to me but its your choice.

Alright, I want to get into the DSM world. I've been looking around for hours on Craigslist and whatnot and have found a few promising ones.

The first one is a '92 Talon TSi AWD with 65,000 miles on rebuilt motor with 2G pistons (according to owner). Has AEM stand alone, Borg Warner S256 @ 24 psi, HKS WG, list goes on. Only thing is, it has a rebuilt title because it got hit and fender and bumper had to be replaced but the frame was certified to be straight. Also, the guy took the back seats out (I can put them back in) and all rear interior. I suppose I could do a custom carpet job to cut down on noise. I don't have a link to the page 'cause I can't find it anymore, but I know it's still for sale. He wants $5k for it. Just wondering if it's worth that since it has quite a few nice parts in it.

Another one I found is a '96 Talon TSi AWD with 18G, all supporting mods, eprom ecu, etc etc. It's in good condition, rebuilt 7-bolt motor with 88,000 original miles on chassis. Guy wants $6k for it and won't go lower.

Which one is better? I'm a little more partial to 2G, but 1Gs are cool. I also definitely want speed.

I would defiantly not go for something with a rebuilt title unless you know the previous owner because usually they get rebuilt for a bigger reason than "got hit and fender and bumper". I bought a 95 awd TSI a few weeks ago and I love it, but I would suggest getting one with few "mods" becuase you never know what the owner did & how fcked up the installations could be. Don't rush yourself, you might overlook some very important details of the cars.

Hope that helped a little.

Yeah, after weighing both cars, the rebuilt one is probably an accident waiting to happen. The motor is strong for now, and when the turbo spools up, it sounds wicked with the 40mm WG. It's just that it looks like a piece of crud on the inside and the bumper needs to be painted. It's pretty much a shell with a sweet motor in it.

As for the 2G Talon, it's good and all, but it has a cracked windshield and the guy won't come down on the price.

I totally forgot about one other one I found. It's a '93 Talon TSi AWD with your usual mods like big 16G and such. The car is in very good condition for being a '93. Paint looks perfect, leather interior in good shape. What does everyone think?

are you dead set on talon cause i just visited craigslist they have plenty awd eclipses

4500. I might be able to talk him down a little, but it's a pretty good buy. Only thing I wish he hadn't done is put a 7-bolt in instead of a rebuilt 6-bolt...probably got it for cheaper. Still a sharp looking car with potential.

It seems that Talons tend to be cheaper. I'm not on a super budget, but I do want to get my money's worth. There was a guy selling a '98 GSX for $11k...and all it had was 16G and supporting mods, nothing fantastic. I was like, forget that.

what's up dude? i'm the dude with the 96 tsi. Um, I posted the same topic earlier about how much to sell my car for. I was tempted by your offer or 5,500 for sure. They basically came to the conclusion to not sell the car because it's so nice, or not go under 7,500. I still would sell it for 6,000 or anything over just because I'm in desperate need. But, I say you buy the 2g since it's better. Ha! ROFL

For all the work that has been done to it recently: timing job, new flywheel, brakes and belts. It seems to be too good of a deal for $2000, especially if the timing belt was done professionally. If you go to test drive it, look at the rust carefully, as it can spread under the pant.

Hmm. I have the 1g in my pictures and I got mine for 1,800...With a little work it is where it is now with a 6 bolt in it with 43,000 miles on it.

Only shitty part is I have a 3 bolt rear end and an iffy tranny if you suck at driving.

Yea, it seems weird with all that work done and selling for only 2k. If they have all the paperwork to back up the work done, then its a great deal I guess.

Wow, what are the odds...actually, I guess they're sorta high since we have the same interest and this is the biggest DSM forum that I could find. I like that your car has A/C for sure. Not sure how hard it is to reinstall... Everyone else said your car is worth 7500? Wow, I guess that supply and demand really bump it up a few notches.

The 1g with the borg warner turbo (VERY good turbos from what I read) sounds nice, but again it's been modded a lot. But people who mod cars to an extent like that usually know what they're doing. Anyone can slap a big 16g on and some exhaust and call it a day. But when you're running 24psi you need to know what you're doing.

Either way, if you've got money to spend like that I'd try to find a stock car and build it up. You can buy a nice stock 1g for 2grand, and if you were to put $3k into it you'd have a AWESOME car.

The price isn't fishy considering the economy right now. I had to sell my truck that bluebooks at $6700 for $4000 because it sat for months. My father in law is a manager at a major dealership here in town and they aren't selling anything. Odds are the guy just can't get rid of it so he's lowered the price. I'd buy it if the test drive goes ok.

After buying one already build I would suggest buying something close to stock and growing with the car. I like working on stuff and getting progressively faster though. At the point where my car was when I got it I had to start buying big ticket items to get it any faster. Also it is easier to learn about these cars on one that isn't all hacked up from the beginning.

go with the first gen cars 1990-1994 they are faster and lighter then second gens and are easily capable of 400+ on stock internals with simple bolt ons granted i have owned both and i enjoy my first gen more than i did my second gen it is well worth the price i paid $2,400 for my first gen gst and its a 90
