smoke at idol and under high rpm. listen for any knocking or pinging also at high rpm. snap the throttle listen for bogging or hesitation. look for oil leaks. shift threw all the gears feel for sticking or popping out of gear. dont be afraid to take it to red line. fell how it runs, smooth or rough. 140k isnt to bad for these motors. ask LOTS of questions. like repairs that have ever been done. if they keep up on routine maintinence. really listen to the turbo spool up. any unusably loud whining that could be a worn bearing. is it the original turbo? you dont want a tired turbo LOL. check other little things that will save u $ down the line like the tires. how old the filters are and such LOL. i say good luck with it. im always scared about trading cars LOL

Do a compression test. Take it for a drive and see if it shifts well, makes any noises, etc.. If that checks out, see if he has any receipts for maintenance done on the car. If not, be prepared to do all the maintenance before driving the car. Other than that, I would do the trade.:thumb:

So obviously my name says it all, im a noob to these forums and to DSMs in general. Tuesday im going to check out a 95 eagle talon tsi awd. From what I know already of cars in general and from what i've heard from people I know, this is a pretty good deal right here but none of them own a DSM themselves so im not taking it 100%

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

Yeah its a long link, just click it it'll take you there.

Some things im wondering.

1. The "Clutch is slipping and will need to be replaced ". You guys think this is a sign of crankwalking?? thats what im most worried about, getting the car and 2 months down the road my crank goes for a long walk and the only thing that can catch it is my bank account...

2. The mods he's done to the engine, think this will cause problems since he never put in a new boost gauge?

3. it has 74000 miles, he said he replaced the timing belt at 55k. Think its time for a new one or wait a bit?

4. this goes into 1 as well but, he says he put a new clutch in at 55k as well, and at only 74k its starting to slip again??? I really hope its not crankwalk I dont have THAT much money to fix that.

:beatentodeath:

5. Just to be on the safe side, I've read that the best thing to do with a 2g is to either put in a 1g motor or get new bearrings and other parts to make sure the crankshaft stays in place. Which would be better to do, I will have some money to put in but not a crapload.

6. Anything else you guys can suggest or help me with would be great.

I always wanted a talon and once I saw this car for that price, I immediatly said I have to call this guy thats way too good of a price to let go. Going to the bank tomorrow to get a loan and meeting up with him tuesday. Im so damn excited, I know im going to have tons of fun with this car I Just hope I dont have to do too many repairs too soon.

Make him a offer of 3,500 even. Good price car looks clean, just buy it and if it breaks just live through the pain like all of us have :thumb:

Yeah thats the thing. Im just worried i wont see one for this price for a long time. 74k miles isnt much for a 95 car. I cant afford the car thats not a problem, the maintenance is really the only thing im a bit worried about. But I also dont want to let it go and have some other guy snatch it up. He put alot of repairs and replacements into it, so thats got my hopes high. Other than taking it to a mechanic, is there a way i'd be able to inspect it myself before I buy it for telltale signs of c.w?

Look here- Clutch Adjustment
(scroll down to pedal pump). Thats what happened to my car anyways. And if you drive a car hard, you can wear out the clutch that fast. Timing belt should be done every 60k so you should be good for a while, but ask for recipes.

I bought my car for 3500 and it had more problems + more miles. It's the rarity that jacks the prices up.

cool thanks denozzo. i will definatly see if that feels like the problem when I test drive it. His decription of the clutch is slipping is pretty vague i'll have to check it out myself.

yea, don't be too worried about crank walk. It's really blown out of proportion by "outsiders"

Yeah I had a friend of mine who thinks her stock celica other than the body kit is a badass street machine tell me dont get a talon they're crap they break easy. I just told her "really, cause just last week you told me to get a 2g eclipse right? You do know they're the same car?" bah, i'll show her what a real car is when I get my talon!

Good luck with it man!

Just use good judgement, and don't be afraid to come back here with more questions. The search is really really really helpful too.

When I bought my tsi awd I had to sink $5000 more into it in repairs/maintenance and have more to go... FIND ANY EXCUSE TO BRING THE PRICE DOWN.. if the clutch is bad automatically will cost $500+, plus rust can cost a hella lot more to fix and may prevent a passed safety inspection. Look on the top of the strut towers, and near the gas tank, common rust safety issues on these cars. Check for a oily engine may indicate bad gaskets, and please do a compression test before you buy. You want at least 150's across the board, worst case you can get a new engine for under a thou.

Oh yeah check for fluid spray near the transfercase since the seals tend to go quick. good luck and expect some do-it-yourself repairs (the fun part)

Definitely get a carfax on it before you buy. He says it's been wrecked, you need to know for sure it was just cosmetic damage. Make sure it's steady at high speed and that the steering wheel doesn't shake back and forth. It looks pretty good as long as it wasn't hit too hard. Engine looks clean. And yes it is fine he doesn't have a boost gauge with the mods it has.

crank walk is not that common. i was reading somewhere and it said something about only 14% get it or something like that. it also said that if you dont get it by around 100k miles then dont worry about it, i dont know how true it is but it just something to think about. i live in garfield hts. so if you even need a hand then let me know i would be glad to stop by and help you. also i could show you how to do the clutch i did my buddies in his 95 gsx this past summer and then i did one in the 420a-t i sold yesterday. the pedal thing is the first thing to look at, make sure the pedal is engaging and disengaging the clutch all the way. if the clutch is already bad then he did something to maki it bad. driving it hard. or maybe he just put a peice of junk in there. overall the car is clean and i would go for it. dont worry about him selling it. around here they are always real cheep over the winter. no mater if its awd or not. tell him you will give him 3200. and if he says no, then just give him your number and say "well call me if you change your mind" and walk away. i bet if he dont stop you then he will call you by the next day.

i got my talon about 3 weeks ago and the clutch felt like it was goin out but i check the fluid and it was really low so check and if it is add a little and it mite fix it. well if you dont get it i mite be about to find you one for cheap cause i come across them a lot for around 2k i only got mine for 1400 but i payed 3k for my eclipse but it mite not be that close

wow thats a better find then the one I found. I hate autotrader now LOL. Looks like the only thing i would have to do right away is paint it, I really dislike red cars but thats just my own taste. Other than that, looks great i mgiht have to call that guy!

oh yeah, on the desc of that car the guy says its fwd, is there that much of a difference between awd and fwd??
