Hello, ive been looking for a new dsm for a while now after my last one was smashed up in a hit and run while parked on my street. Ive recently found a reasonably cheap 1990 TSI AWD which is right in my price range but there is a few things wrong with it. Here is the info he posted in his ad, he is asking 900CDN

"I just finished rebuilding the motor.

200xxx kms on the body according to the odometer.

The good:
-Runs and drives great
-Fully rebuilt cylinder head (by D & W)
-ARP head studs
-New headgasket

-6-bolt block rebuilt:
-BSEK installed
-new NPR pistons and rings
-new gaskets everywhere
-new water pump
-new timing belt + hydraulic tensioner + pulleys, etc
-new bearings
-crank was ground and polished

-New Bilstein TC shocks on intrax progressive springs (Handles awesome)
-AFPR with gauge
-1990 EPROM ECU
-New JDM Exedy clutch.
-New clutch slave cylinder.
-Cruise control eliminated
-A/C eliminated
-New alternator
-Fartcan on the back

The bad:
-The paint is not perfect
-Driver side fender bent in from the door being misaligned.
-Cracked windsheild
-Oil leak. Fairly sure its from the gasket in between the main seal and the metal housing for the seal. This would require you to drop the transmission.
-2 snapped oilpan bolts.
-Power locks do not work.
-Leaks PS fluid.
-Flywheel has a hairline crack in it.
-Mismatched rear seats (not installed)
-No roof liner
"

Do you think its worth it?

Things it has going for it:
-AWD
-Already has some 2gb stuff on it (Popular)
-Fairly well priced

Things going against it:
-7 bolted
-Probably never had timing chain/similar 100k work done
-You never know what 'A little work' means.

For one, you cant say having a 7 bolt is a strike against it. Not all 7 bolt engines are bad but you do look like a newbie here so you might just be confused by what you've heard second hand.

Either way if you like the car call up the owner and talk to them about it and see what things it needs. I'm sure you can probably get them down to $2500-$2800 also if you're really interested in it, and if it runs and drives right.

i would hold out for an 5 speed. i have an auto and wished i waited for a 5 speed. but opinions are like assholes everyone got them.

Hey guys I'm a 420a regular so i don't know much about a turbo 1g.
I wanted your opinion on this car before i went out a bought it.
The car is a gsx with an automatic and blue smoke coming out the tailpipe at high revs. The guys wants 750.00 for the car. But I'm really looking for a 5 speed. Thats the other thing, would it be worth doing a swap.

I would just wait around for the exact car and specs of my liking if I were you, 5spd is definately a lot more fun to have especially with AWD.

yes ever since i started driving manual ill never go back ecspecially with awd, and with gas prices, you can shift when ever you want. Also just a FYI and dont quote me on this, but the last time i checked blue smoke meant that the turbo is blown, idk if you test drove it or what or if the turbo is fine but the last time i read about blue smoke out the exhaust it meant that the turbo was blown, so check up on that. And i also would just wait for the car you are looking for it took me months to finally find a :talon:Eagle Talon TSi AWD:talon: i wanted for a reasonable price, i finally just got lucky that my frineds selling his. Just wait around, look on craigslist.com for a decent :dsm:GSX:dsm: 5 speed.

Hope this helped!!!

I wouldnt buy it. Blue smoke is not good, even if its just the turbo. You could get a 5 speed in that condition for about the same price, and then it would be worth putting money into.

Blue smoke can mean any number of things are bad. As dsm_onster stated it could be the pcv valve. Your turbo shaft seal, valve guide seals, and piston rings are also usual suspects. Auto or 5 spd, you should expect to have to do some serious work when buying a car that old for a price that low. Hopefully you wont, but expect it. The fact that it's an auto wouldn't be the deciding factor for me. In fact I'd love to have another 1g auto GSX. Stock auto tranny holds more power than stock 5 spd tranny, don't have to worry about clutch assembly replacement, less boost drop during shifts, more consistent strip times, you can manual shift if you want, less chance of screwing up and breaking something. I can't tell you how many 5 spds I've destroyed. One possible deciding factor would be the turbo system. The auto came with a 13b that's smaller than the 14b on the 5 spd. It also came with a crappy exhaust manifold. The outlet to the manifold is not much bigger than a silver dollar. You can upgrade the turbo to a 16g fairly easily, not as easy as the 14b but easy. The only difference is the oil supply and both coolant lines. If it drives good and shifts good I'd get it just for the simple fact that I don't see many 1g GSXs for sale around where I live so it would probably be a long time before I came across another one, auto or 5 spd.

I would not let the auto be a deciding factor either i love a manual but i got an auto. I knew someone that went to jail and he needed a grand to get out so thats how it happened. If you get the right mods you can make an auto launch just like a manual then have "perfect shifts" how many manual drivers have had a faster car and lost a race due to the fact that they missed a gear? If im not happy with mine after i finaly get it back on the road ill take that auto out and put in a manual. But as with the blue smoke have fun sounds like piston rings but theres no telling could be a few things. If you got the money to blow go for it just dont plan it to be your dd just yet.

So I went to test drive the car in the afternoon and was pretty disappointed. I would literally stand on the gas peddle and the thing wouldn't rev past 4k or switch gears. I tried manual shifting but did not work. There was this button on the center console that read power when pushed but I couldn't feel the power anywhere, the thing didn't work. This car suffers from big engine and tranny problems. Fixing it would go way over my budget.

Dont give up keep looking check craigslist where your at. Here where i am the want way to much but as PIMking keep stating IM in a RICH town and all the other towns around know it.

Sorry about the bad luck with the car. Usually they merge threads like this into the "What's this DSM worth?" Thread. Strange...How bad off was the body of the car? I'd say buy the car, and pull the motor. For $750 your basically buying a rolling chassis of a 1g awd. It's around the right price...

That just brought a tear to my eye;) Haha. Bet seriously, buy it for your first turbo car. It's a project and it will teach you alot. It's dirt cheap and it would not cost much to fix if you know what your doing.
GO FOR IT BUDDY!:thumb:
