i have had at least 15 2nd gen gst's and gsx's, and have had marinably luck with the reliability of them. nothing serious, but yet minor headaches.
i have spotted a 92 talon awd 5 speed near home for 900.00 bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
now you know there is always a catch................................
1, the guy tells me that it doesnt go into first. don't know why. it drives fine through all other gears. need tranny rebuild??????
2, the car overheated at one time, they had the head shaved (so he said), and new head gasket was installed. but when i looked under the hood, the radiator hose is off...... do u think theres still a problem? (i do)
3, guy says that it drives fine , but when you hold the car floored,it starts to overheat.if you dont beat it, it never does............do u think this could be the catalytic converter?
the exterior is a 8 1/2 out of a ten, and the exterior is got to be at least a 9 out of ten with not a single mod done to the car.

im looking to buy one to modify to about 400 whp, so i may have to rebuild motor anyway to acheive this............................
is this a good base to begin for the money? please give any and all advice

I guess, but you'd only be paying for the shell.
To get 400whp you pretty much need a complete rebuild. Rad hose off? No wonder it overheats. It not going into first could be linkage. Not sure where you got the idea of that being the cat. But if you're buying just a shell, I'm sure you could find one much cheaper.

the reason that i said that the cat could be making it overheat is because its the orig. one and may be clogged and causing to much back-pressure. and no, i didnt say thay he was DRIVING it with the hose off, just that when i looked, it was off. (the car has been sitting for about a month)

If that engine in that car is indeed a 7 bolt like your other 2G's dont waste your time with it. Go for a 6 bolt 1G, if your gonna build a 7 bolt go with a 2G bodystyle. Just my $0.02

any other way? without saying "hey dude, can i take the clutch cover off to see how many bolts hold the flywheel on"
if its a 6 bolt shouldnt it have the older style motor mount up front ( the goofy L shape one that wraps around to the front of the motor) or did the early 7 bolts have this too?

a plugged cat isnt going to make the car overheat, thats caused by other things. plugged cat wont let the engine run fast enough to cause this

Well........

I found a 92 gsx.

inspected

5 sp.

180,000 miles on body (called the dude he said that he rebuilt the bottom end of the engine)

stock turbo

walbro 190lp fuel pump

front mount intercooler

gready type s bov.

2.5in exhaust

so if i go and test drive it and everything checks out ok. what would be a good offer?

Any pictures of it? And how many miles on the rebuilt engine? Is there anything that needs to be replaces like the suspension?

no pics...sorry, but he said paints good and int. in good

he said there are 30,000 miles on the rebuilt bottom end.

he didnt say anything needed to be replaced, but i guess i'll find out tonight when i test drive it.

(he did say he replaced the timing belt)

also what does it mean to rebuild the bottom end compared to the top end?

With those miles and a realy realy.... realy nice body 1400-1600.

With those miles and a realy nice body and interior 1600-2000

With those miles and a body that looks like it has 180,000 on it 800-1100

alright i guess ill start the offer at $1400 and go from there.

but:

is it even worth buying this car?

i mean,

will i end up putting mucho $$$$$ into it?

since the miles are so high, will the car soon start falling apart?

Us Puerto Ricans say " Miles are just numbers how the car was maintain is what matters"
Ex. I've seen people out there have good offers on cars and they refuse because of high miles, but some cars with low miles end up getting a blown engine or something because of lack of maintenance. So in my opinion go out there test it if everything seems good go for it. PS. all my cars have had high miles and never gave me problems here they are listed:
1990 integra....170K
1996 mazda 626....170K
1991 civic hatch....165K
1996 eclipse RS....185K
1994 mustang gt....180K
1989 mx6....212K
my most current one
1995 eclipse GST....221K
They all had high miles and they all ran good the only ones I rebuild engine was 96 RS because I want it to have up to date. And the 95 GST which was the only that had a problem cracked valve.
Think about it and perform the important tests and good luck:thumb:

I would go and do a compression test on it also, and check out the car. "Good" exterior and interior to one person is "bad" exterior and interior to another.

the miles on the car will give you a over all idea of how the motor and suspension are. at the very least i would change all belts and hoses( around 700-800 dollars if you go through a dealer, or around 300 to 350 doing it by yourself) look on spending about 2k to have a reliable dsm, and about 3-4k to have a fast one.

i really doubt that this car was well maintained. i may be wrong, but i think it was previously owned by two teenage boys.

so.....

my guess is that it was raced and beaten, only slightly maintained.

the guy selling it now said that he did all of the engine work. so....who knows...

with that said.

is it worth....say....$1200?

or should i wait until i find a good deal on a 96 or 97 gsx with lower miles?
