IMHO It sounds like a pretty OK deal.
BUT!!!!! Find out as much as possible from the PO, I'm talking like every mod where it was bought from, why is it being sold? And so on. But def do a pre-purchase inspection.

the car i am looking at is a 92 eclipse GSX, it has been modified a little bit, he had the car set at $2800 obo , when we started it up it was running fine then after a few min. it just quit, we tried to strart it again but it would'nt, the starter acts like it wants to turn it over but when you turn the key over the pulleys move about an 1/8th in. I am wondering if the powersteering could be locked up because it made a belt squeel when it stopped, it is the original powersteering pump on it, and so is the starter, or maybe it could be hydrolocked from a headgasket leak, not sure if it has a leak though. The motor is rebuilt it only has about 1500 miles on it, the coolant was a little low when we checked it after it ran and quit.
After that all happened he asked me if anyone wanted a parts car (this Car) He said he would sell it to me for $800 with it not running. another question i have is could i tow this home in neutral with a rope even though it is AWD, it is a manual 5 speed, but i think he said something about if i towed it home that way that it would screw something up in the rear end, because the rear end would get warm and ingage or something causing it to drag the rear tires, i live about ten miles away from were the car is located. Also i put the specs of the car on my profile, let me now what you think about it

Thanks, Mike

Doesnt sound like a bad deal, i wouldnt buy it for 2800. but 800 i would awd is starting to get few and far between. If its only like 10 miles just take it easy. Its not recommend but u got to do what u gotta do i guess. If the dsm had a headgasket problem i would assume it blow white smoke out the tail pipe. But to make sure do a compression check.. If i was u i would get it, i get sad seeing these cars getting parted out..

I'm gonna assume that the Timing Belt broke, bent a few valves, and possibly broke a few valves.
BEFORE you buy this car.
Get a 3/4 ratchet & extension and try to spin the crank
If it spins 360 the belt did not break and the valves are fine.
If it spins most of the way and just stops you have the scenario I described above.
Trust me on it the same thing happened to my car.

I agree with the above. Only 10miles won't hurt it. If it were any further, I would recommend removing the driveshaft. I recently bought a 95 GSX and almost towed it home nearly 400 miles and dragging the rear wheels. Of course, I wound up just getting a full uhaul trailer.

I would def. get that for $800 if the body is in good condition. Even if it needs some motor work, you really can't go wrong w/ that price. Especially if its just a powersteering pump. You'd be getting that 2800 car for only about $1000 after parts. I say do it.

a little simpler way to see if the timming belt broke just take off the timming belt top cover and examine it...I would imagine u could tell just by looking at that..

I was putting that in there to check for bent/broken valves.

I can see the Belt and cam pulleys and the belt has good tension, if it were some bent valves how hard would it be to replace them. also the engine is new the guy said he had it rebuilt for $4500, he said it has .02 wiseco pistons and a new hks exhaust cam, and High Volume Lifters, who knows if that is true, he gave me a card where he had it built, im going to call the place to see what exactly was done to it, im hoping the problem isnt in the bottom end

we'll my 2 cents is this, if the turbo doesn't smoke and you can verify that it has no bent fins by removing the snorkel, and see it has a double blade turbine, along with verifying that it has 650cc injectors, then buy it without looking any further. You can part both of those pieces for 500 bucks easy. 300 extra dollars is without a doubt not gamble. I sold a 1g chassis for 500 bucks on ebay. Don't give the seller anymore information than you have to, secure your intrest up to the 800 bucks, buy it and worry about it later

hey TIMOT, when he started the car up it started fine but it was lopin, the guy said that the timimg might have been off, or a sensor was going bad.

thanks mike

get prove of the work, parts done. and go from there like said above if thats the fact grab it for 800. Just be cool about. Dont let him know how bad you may want it.

another thing is the car doesnt have a turbo timer or a electronic boost gauge, after i get the car and fix the problem should i look into getting that stuff.

boost gauge most deff. but the turbo timer rele isnt necessary. Just let it cool down for about a min or two.. You dont need a electric boost gauge. There kinda expensive, i dont know if you mean a boost controller. But a regular boost gauge will be fine. Autometer is good.

Well you can if you want, electronic isn't necessary. But i have a hallman boost controller, its a manual boost controller. Works awesome and you get a lil less leg, not much. But with that they recommend a boost gauge, and free flowing exhaust and intake. And you can get one for around 70 buck or so..

Also if you wanted they also sell in-car manual boost controllers. I dont know much about them i have herd mixed things.

the car has a manual boost controller but its under the hood, it would be nice to get one inside the car

if your willing to spend 400-500 bucks for one, by all means go for it. But i wouldnt if i already have one. Or if you can find one used for cheap, that works also.

thanks for all the posts, i am going to pick up the car tomorrow, i will keep everybody informed on how its going.

thanks, mike

So there is a boost controller, but no boost gauge or datalogger?

Sweet..

Doesn't sound like a bad deal. Definitely try turning the crank, checking for bent valves. If it's valves, a head rebuild will probably run you from $300-$600. Just depending on what parts and machine shop you go with.

You could also part it out, or gut it, sell the shell, and buy a nicer and running DSM to throw all those parts on. :)

My friend is selling his
6Bolt rebuit motor with only around 3k miles on it
1g head
big28 tubro
350 hp clutch

to me for $2,100

also me and him is going to install it in my car

and i wanted to make sure it was a good price because 2,100 is alot to spend on a motor

what is a 350 hp clutch? Does it come with a flywheel?

As long as the compression is good in the engine its not that bad.

Does the engine have forged internals?

Is the head built?

Does it come with cams?

Same goes for the turbo, does it have any shaft play?
