Funny thing.. I bought my Talon for 1,000 with 107.000 miles. It wasn't running, but when I got it running it had a rod knock. Looking back, the money I saved wasn't really worth the work that went into it since the motor needed to be rebuilt and other stuff arose, but if the one you're looking at drives now maybe it'll be fine.

It all depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you plan on buying it just so you have something to drive and dont want to throw money into it than dont get it. If you plan on changing things out to make more power than you most likely would want to rebuild the engine anyways just to make it more reliable. So it basically comes back to whether or not you are willing to spend the time and money to fix things when they go wrong.

So I went back to show my girl the gsx and talk to the guy some more about the car! I wanted to check the dipstick to see how the oil looked! There wasnt hardly any oil!! Thats from sitting for 5 yrs the guy said. So that im sure that is why it was nocking for a min then went away! So tommorrow morning I am going to his house and were gonne put more oil and take it for a test drive!! If everything goes well I might just buy it!

Im lookin to make a project car out of it! So I plan on putting alot of money into the motor!!!

The oil did not go anywhere from sitting. Unless the drain plug is leaking. You can use that fact to try to lower the price. I would also check compression. A low number could also knock some money off the price.

good idea, I'm sure you'll be very happy, I had a friend pick up an awd 1g for THREE HUNDRED dollars, and all it needed was a new transmission, which he had in his yard.... he had that car running and hauling ass that same night and the price was a real steal.

300 wow that's crazy!! I am most likely to buy it tommorrow! I figure it will be a great project for 1,000 bucks! What numbers should I be lookin for with the compression test?

Correct me if im wrong, doesn't these cars come with eprom on the ecu's?

A 1990 eprom ecu is VERY rare. a 1991 is as rare as all other 1G eproms.

The low oil wold definately cause the lifters not to pumpup right away and would lead to the tapping you heard on startup. Is it smoking during idle? if so, suspect rings or turbo. If it is smoking just on startup suspect just the valve stem seals. If it is smoking during acceleration suspect turbo, rings, or just a pcv valve.

Yea, as suggested, a basic compresion test will give you more info.

ok i was thinkin of buying a 1997 gs at with a bad tranny for like $500 what tranny are in them and what can i get it out of or will only eclipse work

Hey, as far as what type of tranny the n/t carry imnot sure. What im sure about is that you can get a cheap tranny at your local yunkyard, or spend a bit more and get a rebuilt one, they even come with warranty.
So, my advise would be, get the only if the tranny is the only thing thats bad.
And do the dirty work yourself after all being your own mechanic is what dsms are all about, its only gonna take a couple of jacks, tool box, pry bar,and common sense.

its the a604 are those in other cars??? some one told me u can get it out of other cars too

I'm not auto, but I'm pretty sure I remember reading about the A604 having multiple variations in different 420a cars, from like 95 plymoth voyagers all the way to 03 pt cruiser turbos. Do some research on 2gnt.com before you take my word for it, but i think i read some like that in the past.

I don't know, but that's probably true because of the 420a.

Why do you keep posting in the 420A forums when you clearly have no experience with the platform and you never offer any solid technical advice?

Rule #3...

Don't try to help if you don't know the answer - bad advice can be worse than no advice (no "I think" or "I guess" or "I've heard").

I do apologize if that comment leads someone down the wrong road, but that's why I did specify that I don't know. I did have a 420a before, but I didn't ever touch the motor, so yes, anything I know is speculation, but the threads still interest me. I'll keep my nose out of them from now on if I'm causing confusion. You are right though, that is a forum rule. :nono: So I do apologize even though you are singling me out in this thread. The three posts directly before mine started respectively with "some one told me," "I heard," and "I'm pretty sure." Nevertheless, I apologize to the forums. :thumb:

...

^ paul your ###, quit bieng mean to me LOL.

I KNOW all these cars contained a variant of the a604 transmission.
I also KNOW that they are not all direct replacements because of the variations in them, and that the 89-91 models were actually required (by the auto highway safety dept.) to be bought back by chrysler for there malfunctions in there ultradrive features.
Do try and avoid any of the 89-91 versions.
The a604 was originally known for its inability to perform well since it was put on the market and has had numerous, numerous improvements made to it throughout the years. Meaning the newer version of it you get the better off its going to me made. Now if you want me to actually disect and figure out exactly which transmissions will be a direct bolt in- then you will have to suck up to me because that might actually take some researching LOL.
