That Red GSX

Well we are starting off and catching up on about 13 years of ownership. I’ll keep it shortish.

I got the car my junior to senior year in high school. Had a 95 RS before this car which was clapped and TBH glad I beat the snot out of it instead of my GSX.

Shortly after graduating I thew a 255 walbro, 850cc, 20g, front mount with hard piping, and a full exhaust with a wideband on it. Used Ceddy and flashed the black box and was around 320 hp at 19 psi.

This lasted about 5 years before it spun a balance shaft bearing in the bottom end.

I already had a spare motor. Refreshed the 97 bottom end with new piston/ rings and bearings and a BSE.

Ran the car like that for a couple years until the china bay 20g bit the dust. At that point I bought the Taiwan 25g, ecmlink, 1200cc and put in BC 272 cams and switched to speed density.

Made 430 on the dyno with boost control issues reviving to about 5500.

This is now where the car is currently. I solved the boost control issues and switched to a Ingersol Rand 3 port EBC. I then pulled the trigger on an ethanol setup. This entailed an ethanol sensor, new ptfe fuel lines, SS fuel lab filter and a walbro 450 rewired with fuel and electrical bulkheads. I also opted to send the spare trans to Jacks for a refresh and 4 spider.

I need to order a few wiring goodies and just get a couple of days where I’m motivated to get her buttoned back up. She has not seen the sun in about a year.

Thanks for stopping in.

Figured I’d also mention that after I have the car fully operational again the plan is to rebuild the original motor that came out of the car. The ethanol will give me more safety when turning up the boost higher but I’m nervous about the stock 7 bolt rods.

Well I had some time the last two days and had some motivation to do something with the car. I finished up the wiring in the bay and got all that put back together.

I had time to install all new shifter bushings and a new shifter cup. New bushings for the base slipped my mind when ordering so that’s another day project I guess. Orders new clips for the center console trim on both sides as well.

Filled the trans up with fresh MT-90 as well. Currently waiting for my dad to get here for Labor Day so we can bleed the clutch. Installed a new oem slave from JNZ and a competition clutch fork with the trans this time.

Other than that I just need a new battery since my wife’s car currently has mine in it. Once the battery is in I need to pressurize the fuel system and check for leaks since it’s all new pretty much.

Since my wife decides to do 5 vacations a year anymore I leave in 2 days and won’t be home to get her out and on the road before then. 5 years ago this project would have been done 6 months ago….

Well she’s outta hibernation. I pressurized the fuel system and everything was great. Noticed the -6 adapter on the fuel rail was just seeping enough to slowly bleed off pressure.

So this morning I replaced the o ring and pushed it out the garage door. Let me tell you she was not happy about sitting that long. She sputtered a couple times and then fired up. As soon as it switched to getting sensor feedback she pegged lean and died instantly.

She straightened out pretty good and I let it idle for about 20 minutes with some blips while checking on things.

Going to pull the injectors and throw them on my injector cleaning and flow machine just to be sure. She’s low on fuel and I can smell the gas is not ideal. Need some fresh 93 and some easy miles till get her back in check I believe.

The Jacks trans went into 1st and R for 20 yds just fine. Not that it’s much of victory it does give me hopefulness.

Something I did notice was my voltage at the battery in the trunk is 14.2. The voltage on my turbo timer says 14.4. However link is claiming that I have 18.3? I seen that and killed her immediately and verified with my meter what was already posted.

Changed my t case fluid as well with some redline.

Anyways here’s pictures if you read all that. 👍

@curt-s does the first picture look fimiliar?

You can see what came out when I filled mixing in as well. I rtv’d the breather bulb in hoping that was the issue.

I do recognize a bit of strawberry milkshake but yours is so much cleaner than mine, which was more like somebody mixed HW shockproof with some half and half creamer. I've gone blue this time so we will see what that looks like in a year or two. I have so much I'll probably drain it next summer just to see.

Be sure just not to drive it short distances "constantly" as that will decrease your ability to burn off moisture in the fluid through heat. But, really, who among us can actually put it back in the garage after only 15mins, amirite?

I'm just avoiding rain and puddles full stop from now.

I did consider using the lightweight as well. I mainly changed with heavy because I had 2 quarts already 😂.

I do go for “shorter” cruises maybe 15-20 miles.
Fortunately for me it hasn’t seen rain since 2013ish when I stopped DDing it and been stored inside since. Probably from washing it down TBH.

Figured I’d post an update on the car. I sent the ecu out to Ecm tuning and they fixed the issue with the high voltage in my log.

They actually claimed they should have “reinforced” that connection on R5 I believe when they had the ecu years prior. So they fixed the board and refunded my ecu service request and return shipping.

Ecu is bolted back in and the trim is put back together. Now I just need Penndot to stop peppering the roads with salt so I can take it for a cruise.

To be continued….
