When I test for voltage for the wire to the sensor, I am getting 2.3v. I know approximately 4.5v is normal, so what's it mean to have half of what's normal? Brand new battery showing 12 volts. Thanks

That sensor is a variable thermistor. The resistance is going to change as the coolant changes temperature in which changes the voltage back to the ecu. So yeah sounds right.

We are not discussing the single wire for the gauge cluster, nor does it contain a 5v power source.

Then I'm confused now.

Im talking about testing the wires, not The sensor itself. I have a new sensor that tested good.

Is it just the wire you are trying to test?, or the sensor?.
Sorry but the post before me just confuses me.

Can you explain a little more so He/me/we are on the same track.

Sorry guys just realised the title of my thread was slightly wrong. Im talking about the wires for the coolant temperature sensor for the ecu. Checking the voltage of the wire that sees voltage. I get around 2v when it should be 4.5v I will test at ecu later tonight
