I just rebuilt my turbo and when I tighten my nut on the compressor wheel to 100 in pounds it becomes hard to turn the shaft with my fingers. So is this ok with it being new or what?
 
PM responded, but basically I've run into a couple oil deflector shields in various TD05H rebuild kits that weren't stamped deep enough and would drag on the compressor collar when the assembly was torqued. Not sure if this is your issue, but the fix for me was removing the new deflector shield and replacing it with the old one I removed. This item generally sees no wear unless there has been major in / out shaft play, so it's reuse is 110% fine.
 
i TRied it and it still is very hard to turn.......it seems like the compressor wheel is what is causing the friction. because when the nut is loose it turns fine but as soon as the nut gets hard finger tight it becomes difficult to turn

This isn't possible unless you left something out during the process, or you rebuilt a 14B (flat-backed compressor wheel) with a kit for a 16G/18G/20G (super-back compressor wheel). The compressor seal collar in the 16G/18G/20G kit is shorter, which will definitely cause a problem similar to what you're describing.


just use loctite and tighten it so it wont rub.
Do NOT use this method.

The locknut must be properly torqued or the compressor wheel will spin on the shaft.
 
ok so i took it all a part again and i found that the seal at the exhaust turbine had slid down when i tried to push it in........so i after playing with it i decided to try and put my old back on just to see.....and now if i tighten the lock nut i can spin the shaft better.....im not sure how easily it should spin but it is a lot easier. When i took the heat sheald off there was nothing baked onto it so i will just leave the old seal on it.....i did not bend it when taking it off.
 
I wouldn't reuse a turbine seal. What you're doing is basically the same as rebuilding an engine with new bearings but using the old piston rings.

If anything, the heat it's seen has weakened it's spring tension....and if there was any shaft play the seal has been worn thinner by the turbine shaft which also ruins it's sealing ability.

Do what you want, I'm just saying I wouldn't risk a rebuild over a $10 turbine seal.
 
well the new seal slides down on the shaft every time i try to push it through the housing.......Its on right it just seems tp big so a new one would do the same right..??
 
It's not "too big", it just has much greater spring tension than the old turbine seal so it's much more difficult to get into the hole; again, much like new piston rings have better tension and are harder to compress to get into the cylinder....although I've yet to run into a situation where a turbine seal absolutely wouldn't drop into the groove.

Normally the seal will compress itself as you install the shaft if the shaft is centered properly. If not, sometimes you can use a thin screwdriver to center the seal as you carefully slide the turbine shaft into the center housing to make sure you're not bending the seal.

If the seal is bent, do not use it.
 
OK i got it back together right.....but how hard should it be to spin the turbine.......it seems a little harder than it should still if i spin it...it makes about two revolutions before stopping.....P.S my nut is torqued to 78inlbs.
 
It may seem tighter than normal due to the new journal bearings and seals, as well as the type of assembly lube you used. It will break in almost immediately.

I can make a rebuilt turbo spin as freely as a new one by polishing the turbine shaft and journals while it's all disassembled, and assembling the turbo using a lightweight motor oil....but I'd rather use a heavy assembly lube to protect the internals from a dry startup and have a little drag.
 
how did you get all the build up off the shaft.......i used turbine lube for everything
