I recently swapped on a used 14b.

It had a cracked hotside that I swapped to made in China 16g. The wastegate hole had to be ported, but otherwise the turbo is working.

The problem is, that it has some in-out play, and now it seems that it's also leaking oil, which is noticeable at the bottom of the housing. I do not have to top the engine oil, though, so leak is manageable for now.

Also, there is a high pitched sound when the engine is under load, starts from -0.4 bar, and it rises with a pressure, but stays pretty much constant over 0 bar.

Could be a boost leak, or custom fabrication J-pipe, which is very narrow and has multiple bends, but given the oil leakage and in-out play, it seems turbo is the culprit.

I wan't to rebuild the turbo, but the prices in local turbo shops are INSANE. 500USD for a new central part, or 300USD for a rebuilld.

Given the fact that MHI turbos have inducers, exducers and so on balanced from the factory, I'm thinking of rebuilding the turbo myself.

Can anyone recommend me what is the best place to get a rebuild kit, and what else I should be aware of when doing a rebuild?

Turbo Rebuild <-- Pretty straight forward how-to. As far as the rebuild "kit" Forced performance USED to offer it, but from the looks of it, Ebay is the only thing I can find, and I wouldn't trust the parts as far as I could throw them ;)

The in/out play is bad news if you're hearing an audible noise from the turbo- you may want to remove the compressor cover and inspect for compressor strike. If it rubbed, find another 14B. ;)

I have no idea if it's coming from the turbo. The freeplay was smaller that that I had on t25, but t25 never made any noise.

Are the wheels discardable if they have touched the housing? These turbos are really rare in our country.

You can buy another one pretty easily from people on here. I have an extra, but it needs a rebuild too. The only thing I think you'd have to cover outside of the normal stuff would be the extra for the international shipping. I am planning on just getting that kit from TraderGreg also. It's had a lot of people use it with good reviews.

^^Or just ask Justin what he has... I bought my current turbo from him and it has been flawless, and was bought at a very reasonable price.

Yup, they're junk.
Ok, since this is a daily driver, funny I know, I will probably order the repair kit only for now. I hope the compressor wheel is intact.

What are the problems if bad wheel is reused? Disbalance when spinning and turbo eating itself in a few days? It seems that wheels are only around 40$ a piece?

Pretty much, then you just wasted the money you spent on a rebuild kit.

Sure, but a complete turbo with no wheel damage which may not even need a rebuild is $80-$100.

If I could get them at that price range in Latvia, I would buy 2.

I have already spent ~220$+ for the turbo, and it still needs a rebuild. :(
