I just put a new balance shaft belt in and had to remove the timing belt to do so. Now my idle is screwed, there is a chatter that sounds like it might be coming from the head, and my boost gauge bounces around 10inches of vac. Sounds as if I might have bent the valves. It isnt that loud though. I dont see how that could have been possible everything lined up perfectly. Today I took it off and put it back on. Again everything lined up perfectly and I started it only to have the same results. I dont get it. By the way this is on a 91 tsi.
 
Did you replace the tensioners and turn it 180 degrees? Check out the VFAQ on it, thats exactly what happened w/ mine when i forgot to turn the tensioner.
 
Its possible timing is off and your pistons may be hitting your valves. Try doing a compression test to see. If compression is fine, that would pretty much rule out any major valve work.
 
What do you mean turn the tensioner 180 degrees? I thought I might have bent some valves by hand when I was independently turning the cams and crank to get things lined up to put the belt back on. But I did a compression test and it was around 155 across them all. Ive checked everything over and over again... re-tensioning the belt over and over. I cant find a single thing wrong. Yet it will not run worth a damn. Im on vacation at home and I have to get back to california from utah this weekend.... looks like Im leaving this pile of junk here.
 
You have to setup the cam gears to anticipate cam roll when there is tension on the belt. I just did my timing belt last night. The first time we did not think about that and the timing marks on the cams weren't aligned. Did you follow the manual? If so, you should have noticed this beforehand. Once all the marks are lined up, you have to turn the crank over 6 times and make sure they are all still lined up as the oil pump is only aligned once every 6 revolutions. If everything is still lined up after 6 times, wait 15mins and check the belt tension. If it's good, then start the motor.
