I was talking to my mechanic who builds tons of dsm tranny's anyways he told me not to put synchro shift in my tranny, because he has noticed that it wears down synchros. He said he uses only redline but not to put it in an old tranny because he has had times where the tranny wouldnt even shift afterwards. He says to use mobile synthetic 10w-30 motor oil and a lot of times it smooths out shifting especially in the early dsm trannys. He said he has rebuilt them and they always seem to be in better shape with the motor oil than synchro shift. Has anyone heard about using motor oil and have you heard about the redline messing up older trannys?

Im sorry I meant to say not to use synchromesh the pennzoil stuff. Not BG Synchroshift because it seems to work.

My friend used 10w30 in his car for almost a month... then he blew the tranny. Synchro's didnt go out , i think he broke second gear and a shaft or something... needless to say his tranny was in pieces when we took it apart. He also had people that swore by 10w30 in a tranny tell him do it, and he tried it, but it didnt work too well for him. This was a trans that we pulled from a wrecked gst at a junkyard that had like 97,xxx miles on it. It probably never made it to 100,000... but who knows if THAT trans was previously from a junkyard or whatnot....

i ran 30 weight in my tranny and i had no problems i say i was makeing 400 hp and i ran it for 40k miles and when i tore it back out and sent it to my builder in co springs he said it was one of the best trannys he had ever built. my builder builds 700hp motors all the time and he said my tranny was the best one he saw so i agree on running motor oil. also i switched to 75w90 one time because it was free and when i did i had a problem shifting down into first coming off the highways when i switched back to 30w and ran it for a bit the problem cleared back up.

Thanks for the info. Im going to try to run synthetic 10w-30 and see how long this tranny will last on it for a little test. The tranny has about 95000 miles I think if its the original tranny. The tranny shifts pretty smooth except to reverse. It also has a little bearing noise. Ill post the results. My brother has been running it for about 45000 miles and smooth shifting. 1st is a little notchy but its been working.

I knew I was not the only one thats done this anyone else out there running motor oil in the tranny?

I'm gonna try it also in my 130k trans and leave my transfercase and rear alone see what happens.

Im putting the oil in the tranny today. Mobile1 10w-30 syntec and see what I get. If this is right someone posted saying if I have less gringing and notching that its working becuase that means im causeing less friction due to the oil. So if it gets worse than the oil doesnt work. Does this sound correct?

Well I put the 10w-30 in the tranny and it seemed to shut up the bearing noises a lot. I was so surprised at how much noise went away. Also it usually is notchy going into first when the car was cold. Have no problem now, this stuff worked great. All gears seem smoother when its cold and feels like butter when the car is warm. Reverse still is notchy but seems not to grind anymore. Im glad I tryed it and now its time to see how long the tranny lasts. Ill repost in about 2 weeks of driving to see if I have any problems. Just remember if you do this, do not use motor oil in the transfer case or the rear.

it will only get better with driving depending on what fluid was in the tranny before. when i swaped for 75 w 90 8in my tranny and wnent back it took about a week for it to woork back in. u should also see better downshifting likre off the highway.

got any updates on the motor oil in the transmission?

Still running great and shifts like a dream. My brothers car is tuned now laying 300whp and he still has the oil in his tranny. He has a had it a while and its over 100k miles. Its starting to get real notchy but its high miled and started a month or two after he got all that power in his car. He gained 100whp just with the tune and it seems like the old tranny cant take it.

But mine is smooth as glass almost at a 100k with my tranny.

I have a 90 AWD the worst years for transmissions. I kept grinding third and was having a hard time putting the car in reverse, I thought I would have to rebuild the transmission. BG Synchroshift cleared everything up.
