swapping as much EVO stuff into my 1g as possible

The more I look into swapping EVO parts into my 1g, the more want to do.

I'm already scrapping my 18g for a 16g, and I'm trying to find some EVO Brembos as I speak, er, type. As well as the Galant knuckles.

My next project is going to be one of the four extra heads I have in my garage. I'm wanting to swap in EVO 8 cams, and any other internals that will be even remotely beneficial.

I know its not going to be much of a HP gain, I'm doing this purely to say I've done it. I have a set of HKS 264/272s in one of my heads, but I'm wanting to keep those separate and build that head for a high HP platform and sell it. Or maybe eventually use it when I eventually buy another DSM.

So, what other internals would be beneficial.
So far I've got on my shopping list:
Evo 8 cams
Evo valves, retainers, springs, and guides
Evo pistons (maybe, I kinda wanna run high comp, since I'm running low boost.)

Can anyone think of anything else to add?


PS, I don't intend on starting a WILL THIS WORK thread, I've read a lot about the EVO 8 cam swap on this forum, and another forum as well, and have heard several different sides. BUT I have seen pics of EVO 8 cams in a DSM head, with the required mods, and it worked. Even if I screw up my head, I have more where that came from. :D
 
I wouldn't use a cyclone IM on a 2g head unless you mean that you are planning on using a 1g head, I'm not sure which you mean.


IIRC it is not true that the 1g manual turbo cams are the same as an evo3. I'm not sure about the intake cam but the exhaust cam was different for production and the part has been superseded since to be the same cam. If you were to go to the dealership now and get a replacement exhaust cam it would be an evo3 cam but if you take one out of a car it wouldn't be. That is at least the way I understand it.
 
I'm not going to read this whole thread, but it seems like a huge waste of time and money to have a 1g "evo"
The suspension setup on a 1g and 2g are totally different. So NO galant knuckles and brembos will NOT work. Go buy some wilwoods or better yet, stick with stock since with all this waste of money your going to have a 14second car.
For the cams, if you use evo cams you use the evo intake cam as your dsm exhaust cam. And the exhaust cam out of the evo as your intake cam. It has been done before but it's a big waste of time and money and it probably won't even net you any gains.
 
EVO exhaust valves are "natrium" filled. Don't look at me, its what the brochure says. EVO's come with some good stuff. Tried to get my hands on an EVO throttlebody for months so I could go 65mm bored out, but couldn't find one, settled for a 1g bored to 63mm. EVO crankshaft weighs in at 30 lbs vs. say 35 lbs for 2g 7 bolt. This goes on adnauseam.

I was going to do 3KGT VR4 knuckles, but I guess I didn't say it enough.

And I'm not going for power or speed, but something thats unique, but I guess I didn't say that enough either.

As for the oil location, I was going to run OFH (damn acronyms) I was always told that journal bearing turbos should use the filter housing, while hybrid and ball bearings should feed off the head. Unless I got that backwards.

ALL MHI turbos should be fed from the head with the banjo restriction. If you run from the OFH you need an inline restrictor.
 
You could also run 3mm lifters and the evo8+ roller rockers. The rockers are slightly lighter

7,8,9 should be all the same. IIRC newer Dohc Mitsubishi engines should use the same type of rocker arm.
 
I thought that even though they were a touch lighter the pad was smaller which led to more potential for valvetrain failure.


That would suck.
I haven't heard of EVOs being plagued with valve train failure, so I wouldn't think its a huge difference. But then again, I don't lurk on EVO boards.
 
You could always try and purchase an evo3 SAS (antilag) setup. You would need to talk to someone very good with ECUs to burn you a chip that could control it and it might take a lot of money but at this point there is a lot of work on disassembly of the routines for the late model evos that could be borrowed.
