The more I look into swapping EVO parts into my 1g, the more want to do.

I'm already scrapping my 18g for a 16g, and I'm trying to find some EVO Brembos as I speak, er, type. As well as the Galant knuckles.

My next project is going to be one of the four extra heads I have in my garage. I'm wanting to swap in EVO 8 cams, and any other internals that will be even remotely beneficial.

I know its not going to be much of a HP gain, I'm doing this purely to say I've done it. I have a set of HKS 264/272s in one of my heads, but I'm wanting to keep those separate and build that head for a high HP platform and sell it. Or maybe eventually use it when I eventually buy another DSM.

So, what other internals would be beneficial.
So far I've got on my shopping list:
Evo 8 cams
Evo valves, retainers, springs, and guides
Evo pistons (maybe, I kinda wanna run high comp, since I'm running low boost.)

Can anyone think of anything else to add?

PS, I don't intend on starting a WILL THIS WORK thread, I've read a lot about the EVO 8 cam swap on this forum, and another forum as well, and have heard several different sides. BUT I have seen pics of EVO 8 cams in a DSM head, with the required mods, and it worked. Even if I screw up my head, I have more where that came from. :D

This is a terrible idea.

The Galant knuckles and Brembo calipers are only compatible with 2g's

Stock Evo cams aren't that great, that's why Evo owners install upgrade cams.

The springs, retainers, and valves would be the only one of your Evo upgrades I'd agree with. I have Evo8 springs/retainers in my head and they have been great.

If you want to do something just to say you did it then go the climb a mountain.

I'm running the EVOIII intake manifold, EVOIII 16g, EVOIII 3rd & 4th gears. EVO valve springs and aluminum retainers sitting on my kitchen countertop and soon to be EVOIII 02 housing. Not because I give a damn but because the parts are functionally superior. Oh, and there is the TRE EVOIII rear diff rebuild, which I may or may not get depending on funds. Should have just bought an EVOIII at this rate:D

You still have the EVO fuel pump, EVO fuel injectors, EVOIII intake manifold, EVOIII cylinder head (stupid I know but its an EVO).

evo 9 fuel pump (rewired), there injectors depending on how much power you wanna make. good luck!. maybe the MAF idk if its compatible with 1gs. umm the oil cap on the top of the engine.FMIC w/ a little bit of customizing.

the only swap of parts that would be at all beneficial in my opinion would be the springs and retainers

Actually I did search, and there weren't any actual results. Just people saying they THINK it could or couldn't be done, but no one actually said they did it except IX talon IX and he never posted saying if it worked or not. And like I said, searching another forum I found pics and a write up on how to do it. So imma do it. :D

But I have always been told that the valves were sodium filled from the factory. Maybe that was only on certain years or something, but thats what I have heard.

And my bad about the Galant knuckles. I meant the 3KGT VR4 swap. I got them confused again.

Thanks pboglio for adding some stuff to my list. The injectors, fuel pump, and intake manifold aren't priorities for me. I already have after market injectors and pump, and I have a Cyclone sitting in the garage, which I might not even use. Oh yeah, I also left out the intercooler. I've got one holding for me at the shop.

1timehondalover: I know the cams aren't that great, just like a 30 degree difference or something like that, but they are lighter, which again, isn't much but hey, like I said, I'm just doing it to say I did it.

And I've already climbed a few mountains when I lived in Phoenix

As far as the cams, they said it could not be done, they gave good reasoning, they knew what they were talking about, I hope you prove them wrong.

30 degrees of differnce is a lot.
Regarding the intercooler Dejon mad a piping kit for the 2g, it might be adaptable to the 1g, or you might just need to mak your own pipes. I have a firend with an evo 9 runing around 450hp to the wheels with a stock intercooler, and meth injection.

Don't mean to be an dick, but in a few minutes I found the info on the cams, springs retainers, intercooler. You are right, none of the people who said they were going to try evo 8 cams ever came back with results. Only the people who said they had the two side by side said the were not interchangable.

That being said, there is a S--- ton of good info on these forums, and about a half s--- ton of bad or unbacked up info.

I don't mean to say you can't do anything, I don't know enough about what your trying to say that. What I would ask you is why? Evo-ing out an eclipse for what?

Let us know on the Cams. I always see evo cams go for rediculously cheap...

The Cams will not work. Think about it in simple terms. Or just go look for cams if they are for the EVO they will say EVO ONLY. I dont want to flame so do a little research and it will make sense. It would be like trying to use a set of cams out of a KIA or something. ROFL

I'm sorry if this comes off strong BUT, I DID RESEARCH, for the third time. It came from another forum, sorry if that means it's not valid, but here is the direct quote.

"They can be ran, but it's not a direct bolt on. I don't recall all of the exact details off the top of my head. There are 2 ways they can be ran:

1. The intake and exhaust camshafts need to swap position to accomodate the cas (Evo8 cas is on the exhaust cam instead of the intake). The cas slot is also 90 degrees off, you can adjust the firing order to compensate.

2. Have a slot machined into the intake cam and bolt in like usual.

With both methods you will need to degree the cams, since the timing marks are different and neither the evo gears or dsm gears will line up correctly. This install isn't very complicated but its going to take some smarts. Once you have all the parts sitting on the table, its not hard to see where the differences are and what will need to be done differently.

Disclaimer: Do not attept this if your a dumbass...

These cams are also only slightly different than ours (256' dur., vs. our 248' dur.), the biggest difference is the wieght. Each evo camshaft is 1.1lbs lighter than ours, giving your 2.2lbs off your valvetrain. When you add in the evo's behive springs, aluminum retainers and sodium filled exhaust valves it really starts to add up. The springs, valves and retainers will drop right in. "

I don't agree with what the guy says about firing order. It seems in my mind that you might be able to change them to match one side but not the other, therefore I was just going to do the machining. If it becomes apparent that you can just mess with the firing order, I might do that instead. Sounds easier.

My bad on the typo in my last post. 10 degree difference in duration.

I know they are EVO cams and say EVO ONLY but the stock ones have been swapped before. Just because it says OFF ROAD ONLY test pipe doesn't mean you can't use it on a daily driver.

2gawdtsi : I already have an aftermarket header, and it's too purdy to not use. LOL

And as for the intercooler piping, I'm not going to buy a kit. I'm just going to fab up my own stuff.

My apologies. You can WASTE a lot of time effort and money to get them to work. But I suppose if somebody wanted to ask if you had EVO cams you could pop of the valve cover with some quick releae function and break out the CAPS program and prove your point :D

I stand corrected they can work but I would HOPE that you wouldnt go through all the trouble to modify them to work.

Good food for thought

EVO exhaust valves are "natrium" filled. Don't look at me, its what the brochure says. EVO's come with some good stuff. Tried to get my hands on an EVO throttlebody for months so I could go 65mm bored out, but couldn't find one, settled for a 1g bored to 63mm. EVO crankshaft weighs in at 30 lbs vs. say 35 lbs for 2g 7 bolt. This goes on adnauseam.

I didn't know the crank weighed any different, but I'm running a 6 bolt.

And I know its a lot of work for a low 13 second car, but I'm not building it purely for speed. I've already been there when I was in the military and had nothing else to spend my money on. If I pay $50 dollars for the cams, and I put them in (machine work is free for me) then IMO that beats paying $170 A PIECE for Blox cams, which I know is still cheap for cams, but $50 vs $340 dollars?

Oh, and by the way, I make my money waiting tables for a living. I live in a town that made the Forbes Top 10 List for Fastest Dieing Cities so a better job is hard to come by. So forgive me if spending a half a days worth of tips on cams that will be a somewhat unique upgrade seems like a hell of a deal compared to three and a half days worth of tips for an upgrade that most people have. Last month I crawled out of a car crash that I shouldn't have been able to crawl out of. I'm a over racing, and I'm over having a super fast car.

I appreciate your opinions. Really I do.

It probably is a waste of money and time, but if I was worried about that, I wouldn't have bought a DSM to begin with.

once again, thanks for actually contributing useful input.

b00stedtalon2: I don't really like the shifter in them. I'm using a Blox one that weighs like 40lbs and I love it. Ha ha. Plus I have to extend shifter to use any after market shift knob, cause its a 1g. So finding something that looks good like that is hard to come by in my opinion.
But the Recaro seats would be sick.

I see where your coming from, and I kinda agree.

Again, it's also just being able to say I've got it. I highly doubt I will ever run into some one else who will have the same set up as me. EVER. LOL

Really curious. . . Why would you swap an 18g for an evo3 16g? where's the performance advantage???? It's not like the 16g spools faster or flows more. If you were going to try a custom evo8 16g with a divided runner manifold, that would be something. . .
