The more I look into swapping EVO parts into my 1g, the more want to do.

I'm already scrapping my 18g for a 16g, and I'm trying to find some EVO Brembos as I speak, er, type. As well as the Galant knuckles.

My next project is going to be one of the four extra heads I have in my garage. I'm wanting to swap in EVO 8 cams, and any other internals that will be even remotely beneficial.

I know its not going to be much of a HP gain, I'm doing this purely to say I've done it. I have a set of HKS 264/272s in one of my heads, but I'm wanting to keep those separate and build that head for a high HP platform and sell it. Or maybe eventually use it when I eventually buy another DSM.

So, what other internals would be beneficial.
So far I've got on my shopping list:
Evo 8 cams
Evo valves, retainers, springs, and guides
Evo pistons (maybe, I kinda wanna run high comp, since I'm running low boost.)

Can anyone think of anything else to add?

PS, I don't intend on starting a WILL THIS WORK thread, I've read a lot about the EVO 8 cam swap on this forum, and another forum as well, and have heard several different sides. BUT I have seen pics of EVO 8 cams in a DSM head, with the required mods, and it worked. Even if I screw up my head, I have more where that came from. :D

I have the Greddy 18g, and all I have heard is bad things about it, so I'm going to get rid of it before it blows up.

I've been looking into OBX, and I'm thinking about getting their 20g. Lifetime warranty and one of my buddys that drives an Impreza says he hasn't had problems with it except the actuator, and they took care of it for him. Sent him a new one so he could swap them out, and so there wasn't any down time.

If my Greddy 18g is going to last me though, let me know! :D

DSM_PWR, you asked why not buy an EVO, so I'm asking why buy an EVO? LOL again, I would rather have something unique. Everybody and their mother has EVOs here in southwest Ohio.

This is the biggest waste of time and money I have ever heard. Why don't you just use aftermarket cams since you said you already have them?

Like I said, I'm just going to sell them, plus the head that they are in came off of my old GST, and has oversized valves, aftermarket springs and such, the whole nine, so I'm just going to sell it to fund my current build.

Waste of money? Not really, I can get most of the parts for ultra cheap from the shop I go to.

Waste of time? Probably, :aha: but it's my time, so I will waste how I want to.

Teh evo3 head is pretty much the same as a 2g head. Why get rid of an upgraded evo3 head to have an evo3 head? The cam upgrade you have is the same upgrade for the evo3. Why get rid of an evo3 cam upgrade to get evo3 cams? You're wasting all your money going back to stock. You can never get out of your used performance parts what you put in them, plus you have to buy the other stock parts. Evo3 cams are the same as 1gb turbo manual transmission cams. . . same part numbers.

At least you'll be downgrading not so low if you run the evo8 cams, right? So then why not get evo8 performance cams:confused:. . . but why would you take the time to figure out how to put them in when you could use your upgrade cams and tell everyone they are evo upgrade cams (for the evo3) since you want evo stuff in your 2g car :ohdamn: I'm getting a headache. . .

Don't scrap a REAL MHI turbo, your 18g, for an ebay chinese 20g. The throbbing in my head is worsening :ohdamn:. . . You're concerned about reliability.

The greddy 18g has the same bearing section as the 16g, to which you are swapping. Same turbine housing and turbine wheel and turbine shaft too. . . It's all Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and td05h 7cm^2.

If you want to be different than the evo owners, why buy a bunch of evo stuff and swap it to your car??????????????

i realize OBX is "an ebay company" but I have heard that they are getting better, and the only real issues is with the actuators. Where as the Greddy 18g, I was told has terrible shaft problems.

Just like pboglio said, the quality and engineering that go into some of the EVO parts is far superior to DSM OEM parts.

And I like the looks of the 1g better than EVOs.

We can go back and forth about why I should or shouldn't do this all day and night, and thats all just opinions. If somebody said they wanted to swap out their eclipse 2gb body for a talon 2gb body, would you guys care? Its OWNER PREFERENCE, and doing this EVO-swap-build is my preference.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate input, but the repeated "This is a waste of time, go bawls out" isn't going to change my mind.

It's different and custom - doing something unique is just what is, a sense of pride and I definitely understand that (and wish you luck).

But if you seriously get rid of a genuine 18g (that doesn't have any problems) for an offbrand pos turbo.. :banghead:

It's what you want, but not for the reason you want it though :) . It's not being different from evo guys to run their stuff on your car :) . I didn't say 'go bawls out' on your own car. Sell the stuff and go back to stock. If you want. But why sell the stuff for weaker upgrades when you can just lower the boost:idontknow:. You have an evo motor in your car already. Evo head, evo upgrade cams, evo upgrade turbo, evo everythign already. . . You even have evo cams in those stock heads you have laying around.

Get an evo3 intake manifold to have a 100% evo longblock for your personal reasons, lower the boost since you don't want as much power, and be done. . . Other that the evo8 valvetrain and better design evo3 intake manifold, you're not getting any better parts. If you want to upgrade the valvetrain for evo8 cams, then that's your preference, but where's the results different from the dsm/evo3 valvetrain?

Anyway. Greddy 18g turbos have no shaft problems on DSMs. Unless MHI has had shaft problems with the stock turbo you took off your car, the 14b. The 14b is identical to the greddy 18g. Same parts, same rebuild kit, from the same MHI factory, except for the compressor wheel, compressor housing and turbine housing. Shaft, turbine wheel, and bearings are the same. Greddy buys-straight-from-Mitsubish whole turbo CHRAs and names them. And buys bearigns and center sections and shafts and wheels and housings.

You still need to swap in the evo tranny and rear diff. Those are different. Yep, the evo gearset is stronger. And the gearing is designed for dodging trees and boncing over dirt ruts. But still that has to be one of your upgrades if you're looking to put as much evo stuff into your car as possible.

Thanks nlzn.

I might keep the 18g, but I have to rebuild it either way, cause I'm getting some bad oil blow by. Hoping a $60 dollar seal kit, and having Diesel Injection rebalance the shaft will take care of it.

I was google-ing, and lurking some other forums and found a few people who have said that OBX is just a subsidary or Tenzo R.:confused::confused:

I don't think they are just basing this off the logos being similar either, cause some one said before Tenzo relocated, Tenzo and OBX had the same address???

Are you feeding the 18g from the head or the OFH?

Btw, OBX makes some decent stuff. I had one of their manifolds, shifters and strut bars and other stuff like one my s13. They were good quality.. but I don't know, I just can't trust them with parts like turbos and diffs stacked up against MHI.

I'm not saying being different from EVO guys is like my goal in life, I'm just saying I don't want to own the same 4door AWD car as my neighbor, and the dude down the street. I have a different car than them. And I know EVO III and older and DSMs are, for sake of argument, are the same. The EVO 8 cams are legit different though.

If I REALLY wanted to distance myself from EVO guys, I would just sell my DSM and buy an AE86, or something. I like the engineering and what not, just not the looks. I like the 4g63 engine, but not the CN9A chassis/body.

If the 18g is a solid turbo, then I will just rebuild it and keep it. Thanks for setting me straight on that.

No problem. There's hope for you still ;) . . .

Why do you want evo8 cams? I'm sure 264/272s are jsut as streetable and perform better. You can swap them out of your head when you're ready for your big build that you might do later, right?

I think you'd like an evo3 intake manifold with an evo3/2g head especially with a mild street cam combo (evo8 or 264/272) and the td05h 18g.

I was wanting to sell the built head I have to a friend, cause honestly, I don't think I will build over 350hp again.

Plus, that will help with my lack of duckets.

But as for the intake mani, I was going to use the Cyclone that I have. But I'm not sure yet.

Oh, and as a side note, OFH???? I think my painkillers are kicking in.... :barf:

I think he'd be pretty happy on this setup:thumb:
Great street manners with fast spool and plenty of mid, topend power on tap.
Definitely capable of 400whp+ with the right amount of boost(25psi+), good fuel(e85 or race), well tuned and obviously correct supporting mods.

I loved my 18g when I ran it years back!

EVO3 intake manifold with a 63 mm 1g throttle body with a 16g is awesome street power. I would guess with a 264/264 combo it would be even better. I love my EVO3 intake manifold it was a great upgrade.

Get rid of that 18g chief, premature failure on my first build. Ran it for three months at 22lbs steady.

That would be saying MHI turbos are "junk"
My 18g had no issues at 22psi for 10k miles on my last talon. I sold the car with the turbo in excellent shape and also bought it used with who knows how many miles on it.

If the shaft play is in spec and the turbine seal isn't leaking, then there's no reason he can't get plenty of usage out of it.

I would think if he has the 18g he should rebuild it and use it if at all possible. lets keep budget in mind ;)
Get the evo seats and rims, too cool to pass up. How about that trans swap? It sounds very appealing to me, but it probably doesn't bolt in. Total newb so I don't know.

The 18g might not need rebuilt. Could just be over-oiling, which is why I asked about the feed location.
