Has anyone looked into supercharging the 1.8L? I'm not talking about the crappy electric ones but an honest to goodness supercharger say Jackson...? Isn't that what they run on some of the Acuras and such? Just curious if anyone has tried...if so please share the details...good or bad. :dsm:

The 1.8L SOHC motor can not hold boost at all. Yes there are a couple on www.dsm1eights.s5.com that have turboed but ask them where their car is now. It can barely hold its 92hp. I fried the piston rings in one (70k miles) with only an intake and a UD crack pulley. Now I am a hard driver but if a barely stock car can't handle it then a supercharger with 4-6psi pulley would probably kill it in a week. Also the fabrication work that would be involved to make the supercharger fit the head and line up to the drive belts, find a drive belt that would fit, fuel upgrades, AFC.....etc would probably cost more than the 1.8L. I really hope this doesn't burst you bubble but I don't want to see that kind of money go into a 4g37. I understand your feelings being a NT also. If you know a decent amount about cars and have time put a 4g63NT or 4g63T (much more work) in there. I did my 4g63NT swap for $300 motor/wiring harnes/ecu $300 new 2.0 clutch and flywheel (I used my 1.8L tranny).

Now this is not all you will need depending on year of 2.0 and year of 1.8 or a build up guide. Just telling you what I did. The website above is all 1.8s they can help you. Also please do not go tearing your motor apart with out doing the proper research this is not a small job. Good Luck with the 1.8

the 1.8l can handle boost not alot but it can without lowering compression or double headgasket i wouldn't push anymore than 6 lbs... my 1.8 has a catback exhaust, hi flow cat, underdrive pulley, injen intake and higher compression and have only rebiult the head. and its got going on 116k... these motors are pretty rock solid, mine has about 125hp with these mods and havn't toughed the block yet... but every engine is diferent depending on if its got the crap be out of it.. everyone i talk to with the 1.8 has over reved them alot and they handle just fine... i have over reved mine on accident to about 6500-6800 rpm and it didn't heart it at all.. alot of people i talk to like the 1.8l's because they handle the abuse.. the engine bays of the 1.8's i see are covered in oil, look terible got the crap beat out of them and still run normal for whats its bin threw... now i think thats a good engine to me... but to me i like taking small engines and biulding them and see what they can handle and how much hp they can get instead of haveing dual over head cam, or starting off with 200 +hp i wouldn't mind that but thats just somthing i like to do and i think thats why alot of people like makeing there 1.8's have more get up and go... ;)

By all mean please do build up you 1.8 I started and had a great time doing it, but when I blew the rings I have the very cheap option of a NT 4g63 so I decided to do the 48hp mod (92hp-140hp). I was by no means try to trash talk the 4g37 or people who have just trying to inform him of my experience and the experiences of people the have turboed their 1.8L.

I would love to see a reliable, fast 1.8L :dsm:

Thanks for the replies. The reason I was asking is becuase I changed motors a while back an now have a 1.8 just chillin in the garage. I have a buddy at work who does custom blowers and was just wondering if it had been done. Plus, I would like to catch one of the 2.0T boys sleepin and burn 'em. Everyone says the 1.8 aren't meant to be fast, but every other car company makes stuff for their 1.8's to be fast. I just like the challenge of making slow stuff go fast.....we'll see if I can get it together. Anyone have an idea of where a good place to start would be??? Think I could get a Jackson blower on the motor somehow????? Questions, questions, questions... :thumb:

Also, people have already done the turbo thing....just thought the supercharger would be a nice change without the lag....

If it's just sitting in your garage and you don't need to have it for any time (IE financial limitations, time, etc) then why not go balls-to-the-wall and do everything?

I mean you're talking about more than doubling the stock horsepower to keep with a GST/X/TSi/TSiAWD/RSTurbo/RSTurboAWD so you're probably gonna need to think about internals anyway.

You can always get custom rods and pistons made to whatever specifications you want, new rings are probably a good idea under boost, a port-and-polish of the head and a 3 or 5-angle valve-job and some oversized custom valves would probably help you out as well once you get the blower on there. While you have the head off pick up a set of head bolts and a new head gasket. Hell even pull the crank and have a few pounds shaved off and have it balanced. New bearings of the custom variety could be in order as well. And you can get your intake Extrude-Honed and maybe bore out your T/B.

I'm not sure about what fuel applications there are available for that engine and ECU but you'll probably wanna get some bigger injectors running it under boost and some type of computer/AFC to control them.

Again I'm not sure what's available but a header and a free exhaust would probably help out. Maybe a custom made header and exhaust?

I think you could make it go fast, just would take a lot of work. But it would be cool to see a 1.8 with a supercharger pushing 300HP =P

The motor is left after an engine change. It needs a valve job and new rings anyway. So I was thinking about gutting it and starting anew with the whole thing. Basically everything you just said is exactly what I'm thinking. Plus, I would love to see the looks it got. Does anyone have any ideas as to what company makes an bigger piston or stroker kit that might work for this application. Seems I might have found the Frankenstein crowd I was looking for for this project. :thumb:

I know JE actually will make custom pistons to whatever specifications you give them, I'm pretty sure other companies will too. I like JE's but I haven't had any experience with them with I4s, I used to own a Mustang and they were very popular among the V8 crowd. Eagle, Crower, etc will probably do the same with custom rods.

You could probably get the block bored .020 over, take your measurements and send them into whatever piston manufacturer you decide on and get a nice set.

If you're going all out why not get a set of beefier head bolts and drill and tap the block/head for them as well? Get a good metal head gasket.

If you're going with all the good stuff, maybe double-springs if you can find them to fit for your valves, custom valves maybe, keep the compression up there around 9:1 or maybe even higher depending on how built up you go with your stuff and throw a super on there you can probably net some good numbers.

I dunno exact numbers stock, but maybe you can get the head flow-tested after all the work is done and try to match a set of injectors to your cfm and PSI you've got the super running at.

I dunno if it would work but an S-AFC could probably control the fuel if it will interact with your ECU/MAS.

I think it would be cool to see a small-engine FWD that has a motor that reacts more like a V8, you can probably keep the torque numbers on a pretty even scale with your HP since aren't the stock toque numbers something like 102ftlbs/92hp? Would be sweet to see something like 200/200, it would feel like a V8 with that "instant on" power but it would be coming from a 1.8L.

Pyro, glad to see that some enthusiasm and knowledge are being added to this post. Funny that you owned a Mustang, because I still do. Actually two a 70 Mach 1 that I'm restoring and my 95 GT. I just love a V8, however the Eclipse is still fun to drive. As for the advice that sounds like a sound plan and pretty much what I was shooting for. Still trying to figure out what brand of supercharger to go with. Have to look at clearance issues with the fender walls, pulleys and such. I'll try to keep this updated...but I have a feeling this could be a very long process...thanks again and keep dropping ideas as I am keeping a journal of good ideas and things to look for.... :thumb:

well i turboed mine the only problem was the smoking and that was because of shaft play i ran it about 2 months or so ran no problems at all once so ever i pushed it a little bit .. u can probably do it if u put some time into it

:dsm: brian

i like all these ideas everything sounds great ........BUT...

that might be neat having 200 hp at the flywheel but what about wheel hp?

sounds like an issue for a tranny
if your gonna stick with stockies with no tanny mods than i can help

for a maual trans use a laser tranny they have a better gear ratio but beware in 5th gear with all that power she might be whining a little bit being as low as it is and all
but for an automatic.....stick with the eclipse, best geared auto trans out there well thats my opinion anyway

Assuming your comparing turbo, turbo awd, or NT tranny's respectivly; talon, eclipse, and laser trannys are all geard the same and have the same strengths for thier given model year trans (93+ or so were better I belive). Dont spread misinformation...

As for the supercharging anything is possible with enough money, but you have to ask yourself how much power you would make per given dollar vs just swapping in a 2.0 or buying a turbo car... If you want to build and/or supercharge a 1.8 and make it fast go for it... just dont expect it to be cost effective compared to turbo/nitrous/4g63 swap

Ok..here we go with the better off with the 2.0. I realize that it would be more cost effective to go with the 2.0 but ALOT of people have already done that. I want to do this because I WANT TO...plus I can say that I did it. I don't expect it to be the fastest car out there by no means. BUT I can say that everything that gets done to this 1.8 I did, good, bad or ugly. If anyone wants to chime in about the 2.0 swap, DON'T....

I didnt say that, i'm just saying trying to fab up a turbo setup on the 1.8 would be much cheaper than a supercharger and would likely make more power.

Its your car, your money, if you want to supercharge it go for it...

you turbo'd a 1.8 or a 2.0?
p.s. boeing called, they want their wing back.
just a little joke.

pyro i got the same shift knob as you LOL.. sry yea ive never seen a supercharged 1.8 and im sure its possible and i think you should go for it i allready know how a turbo feels :p i wanna know how a supercharger does on one of these little 1.8 beasts and watch for ur headgasket it mite not like the supercharger mine fought with my turbo :p

im turboing my 1.8 as soon as i finish my body work.

this may sound stupid , but im not doing any internals.

Beacuse, i only want a 14sec street car , and im only gonna be pushin 8psi.

TDO4 will be the turbo of choice. i will be doing , bigger injectors , FMIC , SAFC , Adjustable FPR w/ boost refrence , MSD Ignition w/ boost retard.

now if i dont get a low 14 outta that i will be hella dissapointed.

beacuse now , i jam the gas in , and NO BALLZ.

but my clutch is going , so im pretty sure im losing some HP @ the tranny over it.

beacuse i know what 90hp feels like , and this feels like 60-70ish.

and i have a CAI and Full 2.5" catback. so i wont really know if i wana continue modding until i do my clutch , and know for sure if that the reason the car feels VERY sluggish.

Hate to break this to you but even if your car only weighs 2800lbs with you in it, and your a very good driver, and you can get it to hook up, you would need to make 201 HP at the flywheel to turn a 14.9 If you wanted to run a 14.1 you would need 237HP at the flywheel.

The chances of being able to add 110-140HP on a 1.8l sohc 8 valve engine without upgrading the internals are pretty much nill. Even if you could do it the reliability of it would be far below that of the stock turbo brethern which as everyone knows is shady to begin with. If you inted to run those kinds of times reliably you are gonna need to upgrade the internals...

wow doesnt that jus shatter your hopes and dreams LOL its true tho 14s is alot to ask ecspecially for the 8 valves ugh i hate that about the 1.8 but whos cares im happy with mine my clutch is gone as well i did a nice little e brake burnout or so i thought for about 10 seconds sounds short but its really long LOL and my tires werent even spinning LOL just the clutch trust me add a turbo or supercharger to the 1.8 and order a clutch with it :p cuz youll need it .

Hell , i got a t3 in the garage i could use if i wanted too.

i could use a lil bit of spray along with turbo..... 50 shot.

extra 150 pfft. easy. ive been working on imports for quite a few years now , hondas and all.

i know whats capable with the right combination of mods, and tuning.

i think a better HG will go on of course. now i think i might do the rings & pistons after i get the car running and boosting decently first tho.

ginsu is making what 327hp of his one eight ??

I think he's referring to a centrifigul supercharger, like a paxton that bolts on like any other accessory... I wouldn't think it would be *too* hard to set up, but there would be some fabrication involved (bracketry) and fiddling around to find a proper belt to fit... you might be able to put it in place of something like your AC compressor or something (do 1.8's have AC?)

Nother random thought, do the 1.8's have any other heads that will swap on? because just by adding 2 more valves per cylinder, letting the motor actually breathe, you could possibly gain a big heap of power... something to think about... the 4g93 is a 1.8 (I know it's sohc, but isn't it 16 valve?) you might see if the head gaskets match on that, the 4g92 is a 1.6 DOHC MIVEC head if you can get one in from AUS (they never made it to the US) and it will bolt on to a 4g93... again don't know if those will work with the 4g37, but it's something to look into...

here's a place that has some info on the 4g9x stuff http://www.rpw.com.au/Performance%20Upgrades/Mitsubishi/Lancer/Lancer%20-%20Mirage%204G92Mivec/lancer104engine.htm
