I have a 90 GSX. The guy i bought the car from said that this noise has been going for a long time. i have heard lifter tick on a grand prix, and i know that it doesn't sound like that. I recently did a compression test and i was 150 all across. The noise isn't a slapping, ticking, or anything i can explain. It's like a loud cranking noise. some times i hear nothing at all and the car runs smoot, other days it is really loud. I can only hear it at idle to about 2,600 rpms. the noise comes from the center of the engine to the top of the cam gears. If anyone can help, i would really appreciate it.

could be something related with the timing, and the tensioner. with the rev's that low it likes to makes things shake around. check the t-belt and all of its apparatus and make sure everything is locked down. good luck man.

my car makes that same exact noise when cold mostly but anything beyond 2500 and when it's warm it goes away if anybody knows or has an idea of what it is I would greatly appreciate it if you told us

I had the same problem just after having my belts replaced. Check the tension of all your belts and tighten them.

When was the last time you changed your timing belt & balance shaft belt? It may be that your balance belt is going bad-I ended up just eliminating the balance shafts since the balance shaft belt seems to go bad well before the timing belt. The noise could have something to do with your balance shafts or maybe even a crank angle sensor/sensor plate...which may be a crankwalk issue.

but it makes a sound that looks like it's coming from the head but its not at first I thought it was the timing belt but I checked it and it's not.I did the same thing for all the other belts same thing and if it is a balancer shaft problem are there signs that you can check up on to see if it is??

That was difficult to understand...at first. Anyway, the way to check if your balance shaft is out of phase is by lining up your timing marks. Go to www.vfaq.com and use the timing belt replacement guide.

my car was making a strange noise at the same spot you described only now and then. take your timing belt cover off and push your thumb down in the center of the two cam gears on the timing belt. watch for the cam gears to move in and out and listen for a clicking noise. if it clicks and the gear moves pop the valve cover off and check to see if the cams are seated in the journals on the cam caps. and if the cam caps are torqued right i believe its 18 + 1/4 turn. oh ya and before you do this check to see if its timed. mine was 2 teeth off fresh from the mechanics.

good luck
