Hello everyone,
I know this has been covered many times before but I have gone over all the checks and can't seem to figure out my issue.
A little bit of background on the car first though: I have a 91 awd 5spd Talon. I bought it as just a shell and swapped in the motor from my 90 fwd 5spd Laser. I changed over everything to convert it from a 90 to a 91+ (Throttle body, coil pack, transistor, etc.) The only things I used from the 90 were the CAS (which I rewired for the 91+ connector) and the ecu which I swapped the 2 pins on the harness. The previous owner removed quite a bit of stuff out of the car. All of the emission related stuff is gone leaving some open electrical connectors and vac lines, and parts of the harness have been cut as well.
My issue came about while trying to start the car for the first time after the engine swap. The car will crank but has no spark. As far as I know it is getting fuel. The fuel pump kicks on and I can smell gas when cranking. I tested for spark by pulling a plug wire and attaching an extra spark plug to check for arching spark, I also tried the screw driver method and also tested the plug wire with a volt meter while cranking and nothing. Next I checked the ignition and mpi fuses and even swapped them with known good ones. The CAS is from the other car and was working before. I tested for voltage to it since I modified the connector and its all good. If the CAS had a problem the fuel pump wouldn't be kicking on correct?
Next I checked the coil pack. The secondary's were in spec at 12.5k ohms and the primary was at 1.4-1.5 ohms which is a little over spec but I would think it would still work. The coil appears to be getting voltage as well. The 91+ power transistor I bought was pulled from a running car, but I have not physically tested it as of yet.
Those are the 3 things that would prevent me from getting spark correct? I swapped coils with my known working 90 coil pack and changed the wires over to fit the 91+ and still nothing.
Finally I pulled the previously working ecu and opened it up to check for capacitor leakage, but it looks perfect inside.
This engine and its sensors were pulled from a running car. I'm stumped at this point. I don't know if its an issue with running a 90 ecu in a 91+ car? It has to be something stupid I missed somewhere. Are there any sort of grounds I might be missing? Or are there possibly any other sensors out there that may prevent spark? Thanks for any help.
