Calgary,
I've got a 1990 Talon TSi AWD, basically bone stock and it just hit 240,000kms.
I've had some signs of needing a rebuild, for example, Low compression on all 4, and the oil dipstick popped out. I have been wanting to start modding this car a bit more "hardcore" but I want to get it rebuilt first.

How much approximately would it cost for an engine rebuild? (or motor rebuild, however you want to call it) And I'm not talking about getting it rebuilt with high performance parts, just to get it nice and happy again.

thanks in advance.

If you do the work, no more than 800, and if you have all the tools. you can get a decent rebuild kit from slowboyracing.com for 500. if your not going to do the work, i would say 1200-1500

To be safe I would say 1000. Depends on what machine shops in your area charge to rehone the block and clean it up. I would also check all the valve springs for tension to make sure they are in spec. Not usually a problem but I have seen a few get weak. Other than that, gaskets, rings and bearings are fairly inexpensive.

I personally think thats a pretty lowball estimate. Put together the pieces:

Even if you use stock/stock replacement parts you're looking at
110+ for bearings
200+ pistons and rings
350 for gasket kit
200??? boring, honing, decking the head, new valve seals (or other head work that is needed) approx 300 in machine work
50 for head bolts and other fasteners that you WILL break or lose
200 for timing belt, idler, tensioner
100 for fluids, coolant, oil during break in

Thats 1200$ plus without adding in labor. Having all the tools to do an engine rebuild is also key. Checking bearing clearances as well as sizing piston rings are precsion work, and the average "enthusiast" doesn't always have the tools needed.

I'd say count on 1500$ before you're doing doing MOST of it yourself, and about 2k to have someone else put the entire thing together for you. (thats still you removing and installing the motor, just someone else building the thing.)

Everybosy only looks at the big parts, cam, pistons, bearing and the like. What will really kill your budget is all the small things. A missing bolt, a lost gasket, new vacuum lines and such. I would figure 1500.00 and if you come out under good job, but if you figure 1000 and end up over that kinda sucks.

I personally setup a budget of about 2200.00 for the motor and head. I am a bit anal and painted everything and replaced pretty much everything that was old and sevicable. I spent a bit much for a stock rebuild, but my engine bay looks awesome and I never have to worry if a part might be on it's last leg. Just like my sig states, do it right do it once.

Like was said above, $1000 is kinda low. I spent over that on a simple freshen up, re-ring, polish crank, new bearings, new timing stuff. I broke $1200 just doing that and I used the same piston over again. I would budget at least $1500-$1800 at the minimum. It is almots cheaper to buy a low milage jdm motor from the internet. Its all in what you want. If I had it to do over that is the route I would have took. Just my .02
