i was wondering how much hp my stock intercooler can handle, i have a 16g and i want to know if i will need to upgrade my intercooler to get the most out of it? also i dont want to spend 800 bucks on a fmic, but i found some smaller fmic on ebay for 200 shipped (core 20.5x6.5x2.5) would these be worth the money? how much better would it be than the stock intercooler? also is it relatively easy to mount these and what about piping? is that inexpensive? or easy to do it yourself?

To push the 16g to its max, the stock intercooler will NOT be enough. When I had my 16g on the car with stock SMIC it would heat soak after 1 pull on the dyno on a 75* day, that was at 18psi. If you don't want to invest $$$ in a FMIC then look into water/methenol injection. From around $150 to $250 you can use something like this.

My friends running 12.5 on a stock SMIC and a Big16G if that helps.

He is going to upgrade to a FMIC to see how much it really helps this summer.

i dropped from a 14.6 to a 13.9 just by putting a small frontmount on my car. and i'm running a 14b. so with a 16g it will make a bigger differance yet. to make it work efficiently you will need a small front mount.

for a 16G a supra side mount has netted the biggest gains yet and for guys on a budget....not to mention ya can be stealth too ;)

The sidemount has gone as fast as 11.75 from a local car but it had the larger inlet and outlet on it. He ran it for DSA class at the shootout, but now has moved on to bigger and better things.

so is it easy to install a fmic? how much would it cost for piping and whatnot? does it requier welding?

yea its easy to install, just not cheap to buy.

I have a polished front mount on my TSI but I will be ditching it soon for a stock sidemount and alky injection. Gotta go for the sleeper look.
