Steering lock cause of clutch not engaging?

I tried asking on 3si.org but apparently dont have permission yet so I will ask here. 93 Dodge Stealth R/T. 90k Miles Black 5 speed... I got it for free !!! It was abandoned and I work at the junk yard it was towed to. I am very excited about my new toy and glad to see some familiar things under the hood! I almost feel at home with it already! While i wait for my quiet title... I pulled the ignition hot wired it... and got her turning over! Good news! So I did a bunch of tune up stuff and actually started it for the first time today! Lots of cylinder head tick, I imagine from bad gas. All seems well tell i try to engage a gear... no go some soft grinding..... SOOOOO.. to my question.....

Does steering lock on some cars stop the manual transmission from shifting?

I have to assume that is the issue as I found a receipt in the car for a new clutch (among about 4k in other repairs).

May be a waste of time to ask here but I figured i try!

no way. not in a manual. that clutch "repair" may be the problem... 4k in a junked car, the PO must have been really frustrated.

It was towed as abandoned.... even with a bad transmission still awesome!! I have seen on google that steering lock can disable some cars from going into gear!

I would put it in 1st gear and try to start it make sure nothing is in front of you. It might jump foward

I have a 2G GS-T which has this same problem. Partly it is due to my clutch an the other part is a failing transmission. Put it into gear while its off, start it up hold it in first so it doesnt jump out of gear and then slam it into second. If your transmission is bad or loose on the inside it sill continue to do this. But it may very well just need a good shift to get it moving... good luck.
