Starts won't go out of neutral?

Okay so the 1991 Eagle Talon N/T that I am buying does start. But if it's put into gear it will NOT drive. It can be pushed in neutral but thats it. So any ideas on what is wrong. I don't know much about cars, but the guy I'm buying it from says the neutral safety switch could cause this. So any ideas at all?:rocks:

So... I am under the assumption that this is a manual transmission since there is a neutral saftey switch, correct?

If it is a manual can you put it into any gears, or does it not go into gear or it does go into gear but it doesnt move???

If it is a auto, is there tension in the shifter when moving from P-R-N-D??? Or can you just slide it up and down with ease???

Post some more info and maybe I can answer your question. OMG

It must be a auto because it has a neutral safety switch. The switch stops you from starting the car in drive or anyother gear. Manuals have a switch on the clutch that keeps us from starting the car without ingaging the clutch, which can be taken off and should be. So if the car starts it cant be the switch because it would not allow the car to start. Now if its an auto which im guessing the tranny could be gone. Ive killed two auto's in my life and both would just sit like its in neutral with it in drive. If you rev the motor sometimes the tranny would kick in. Also if a auto is low on fluid it can cause this to happen. It for sure is not the switch.
