Starts than stalls intermitenly

'98 eclipse rs 2.0.
it all started about 8 months ago the car started idleing weird.. i replaced the tps and it was okay for a few hours than went back to weird so i re replaced the tps and checked the wires sure enough there where a cupple wires that where melted together so i just seperated them and wrapped them in electrical tape. car started runing normal.. due to a sever oil leak i had the engine and transmission rebuilt since they where both dowing a quart a day. leak was solved but than the water pump went out so i decided to have the shop do the timingbelt and pully's along with it.. that was about 2 weeks ago now the car broke down (stalled) while i was pulling into the gas staion tried restarting and it would start than stall after trying 2 times to get it runing i poped the hood disconnected the tps and punched the gas and it fired right up idleing rough since the tps was disconnected but still idleing... in deperation i tried cuting off the electrical tape and rewraping but found no new melted wires and no wired where touching .. the car however died again after the tps was reconnected sometimes starting up and driving perfectly fine sometimes starting than stalling withing 5 seconds. please advise...
p.s. i tried reading the computer however when i connect a reader it dosent recognise my car

I just got done checking out the car. I picked up a scanner from walmart and the car died on the highway on the way. the scanner picked up P0120 P0121 P0122 P0123 P1496 and P0138 after consulting the wiring diagram I tore it apart found some freshly melted wires so i re-wrapped and re-routed to a cooler part of the car hopefully. i have a 100 MI drive tomorrow will post results.

Well i took it on the 100 mile test drive everything ran good but the light turned back on i got a P0138 the O2 sensor in brand new any ideas?

Is it a universal or factory fit o2 sensor? and with the wires melting together could have surged your electrical system and burned it out

I had the same problem with mine. I had to get the fuel management readjusted. I didnt have the wire problem that you have but i would look at getting your fuel management looked at. Mine was cutting out when i let off the throttle in reverse.

Not likely an issue. If you can, and assuming it's not a wideband you can watch the o2 sensor and see where it is running. If it is staying consistently above or below 450 mv you could have an issue. It should dance back and forth. If you have an air/fuel ratio meter, it should be around 14.7 to 1 air/fuel. That would be at idle. Acceleration or deceleration changes that dramatically.. If you are electrically inclined, you can trace the o2 wires to the ecm and do a short to ground on both wires and check the two at the same time on ohms to see if they are touching each other. This is while unplugged from the ecm.
