starting rebuild this month, cant choose block internals...

I have a extra 1g block that I will be doing a rebuild on starting this month. I have tried to do some research on the best rod/piston combo but havent found too many specs. I am looking to hit around 350awhp (dynotuned of course) for now and I'll probably get the bug to want to go faster and have more power later on, but for now around 350awhp is my goal (hopefully a reachable one). My current mods are in my profile with the exception of Comp 1012 cams and stiffer valve springs that will be installed with my block.

I have had my mind set on 1g big rods and 2g pistons but many people have told me to go forged. The only problem is that my car is a daily driver of about 50 miles a day. I have read that forged pistons also arent the greatest on cold starts and can wear cyl. walls down quickly.

I will eventually go with a bigger turbo Im sure but probably not any time soon that I see. Also there are a decent amount of funds available for this rebuild but nothing crazy.

I daily drove my built 6bolt for more than a year no excese wear caused by the forged internals. I say if you are on a somewhat decent budget just get your ol' eagle rods wiseco pistons. If you have a bit more money to burn go with some more exotic parts but eagles/wiseco/ross combo will do you very well. One suggestion if you plan on using this on the street with pump gas stay away from 9:1 pistons, I have them and I wish I had gone with 8.5:1. Yes, 9:1 can work great but for the most part they make the engine very knock happy which means you have to lower boost or lower timming both hurt performance.
 
Go with the 2G piston/1G rod combo. They're durable, they'll easily get you to your 350 hp goal, and depending on how much a shop will charge you to have the rods machined to fit those pistons, you'll save some money that you can spend elsewhere for the rebuild.

Is there any particular reason they're telling you to use forged pistons, or are they just telling you to go forged because that sounds like a cool thing to do?

What piston to wall clearance and ring gap did you go with?

Is this common with the 9:1 pistons or just in your case? I was getting ready to buy some and thought a little extra comp would provide good gains overall. I plan on running race gas in either case...
 
they arent telling me forged because "it sounds cool". They said I should go with forged because they are more durable (the way they are made), and that forged pistons are just better performance wise.

anyone have numbers on what the 1g big rods and 2g pistons have handled for hp? I know I said I want to make 350awhp right now but I dont want to max out my block setup with that. Incase I want to go bigger I dont want to have to rebuild block again.

Just use 2g pistons on 1g rods then. You can reliably make 500whp on that, just watch your tuning because cast pistons can't take detonation very well, and make sure you strap on arp rod bolts to those rods and you'll have a nice, solid set-up. In your case, I would think that forged pistons would only help if you ran nitrous and a poo load of boost day, other that you're not going to notice much. You can get 2g pistons on ebay for $150, 1g rods for $40, arp rod bolts for $40, and mounting/opening the wrist pin hole done for $65, making it a total of $295 for a rock solid set-up. You can install the pistons/rods you're self, it's cake. Lol, I just haven't had a piece of it yet.
 
thanks Vertical. Thats pretty much what I was looking for. That 1g big rods and 2g pistons can handle about 500hp. Also that detonation is a little harder on cast than forged. :thumb:

Whats your guys thoughts on using evo pistons? Ive been told they have higher compression im not sure how much higher though. Like spidy Im not looking for anythng real crazy but I want to build it farely stout incase I change my mind in the future. What would be a decent rod piston and ring combo that are forged?
