Starting problem and I might be an idiot

So my car hasn't started in a few weeks and I might have found the reason but I also have a question to ask first. My car is a 96 awd tsi and in my trouble shooting I wanted to check the starter relay which from the service manual says it is a 4 pin relay under the stereo and on the right side of the power lock relay. Mine looks more like 8 pins is this normal.

Now to where I might be the screw up, My starter will not crank and after I try to crank my fuel pump just runs while I try to crank the car. This might be the issue and I am going to go home tonight and try. If I am reading this right I am supposed to have my foot on the clutch as soon as I turn the key to the on position, right now I have been turning it to on and then messing with dsmlink then put my foot on the clutch while the car is already in the on position. Am I reading this wrong or am I supposed to be putting my foot on the clutch before I even turn the key...

Yes........, for a Standard car you're to have you're foot on the clutch, pressed all the way to the floor. But, you'..nevermind

There is no sequence besides "Make sure your foot is all the way down on the clutch before you turn the key to start". It doesn't matter if you have the clutch pushed in before the key is even out of your pocket, or if the key is turned to "On" before you press the clutch. As long as it's pressed in before you turn to "Start" the car.

You can actually turn the key to start and then push the clutch in. Doesn't matter. Most people just unplug the sensor to relieve stress on the thrust bearing during starting. That way you can start the car without depressing the clutch.

Clutch on the floor, turn key. Simple as that.
