okay i have looked on the forums for a similar issue.. but so far no one has had quite my situation.. I just bought this 1995 talon Ti AWD and sometimes it starts up flawlessly the first time and other times it doesn't start up at all.. in these cases.. the only thing i need to do is turn the key on/off repeatedly.. (4-5 time usually) and it will start right up.. when it decides not to start.. i am hearing a singular click when turning the key ON. This is completely at random.. has nothing to do with cold or hot starts.. it really has no pattern at all.. I have replaced my negative battery terminal since then, cleaned and put that electric connection gel(can't remember what its called.. LOL) on both terminals... my friends tell me that it has absolutely nothing to do with the starter.. but the person i bought the car from told me it was the starter solenoid sticking.. so i wanted to know if anyone on here has heard of this before I take my starter out and bring it up to autozone. thanks in advanced..

Sounds like its either the starter solenoid or the starter switch. I would test the power wire from the switch to the starter to see if your getting voltage every time you turn the swithc to start. If you get voltage sometimes but not always then its likely the switch. If the signal gets sent every time then its likely the starter.

no not for me... when i start it then it will just click once and not do anything.. no buzzing for me.. LOL

Try unpluging your clutch safety switch and see if that fixes it. Sometimes the switches go bad or the plastic piece that's on the clutch pedal breaks so when you push in the clutch it doesen't enguage the switch. Honestly it's kind of stupid how the design is and I just put some JB weld over the hole to enguage the switch. Otherwise take out your ecu and look for leaking capacitors or burn marks and sometimes it can even be a bad CAS.

It could also be a starter and you can take it out in 15min and bring it in to have it tested.

I am also having the same issue and mine also makes the noise but not always. I can cancel the clutch switch right away since im auto.
tenn-gsx was correct with his easy test for the diagnosing.

Also have an auto with the same exact problem. Random single loud click with no start. Usually starts after 2 maybe 3 key turns. Just annoying when I remote start and my remote start doesnt start the car.

Bringing this back since this is the closest thread I can find to my problem. It actually sounds exactly the same.

My car just randomly started doing this yesterday. I go to start it and nothing happens. The lights and everything light up like they are supposed to and they dim when I try to start it like there is an amperage draw. But nothing happens under the hood. Not even a click. Tried to jump it and nothing but the same results. After turning the key a bunch of times trying to get it to do something the ignition fusible link blows. I then replace it with the fusible link for the power windows.

So we push started it and it runs just fine. I went from there to the gym. After the workout I come outside and it starts up on the first try like nothing is wrong. From there I go to the parts store to pick up a couple fusible links. Car starts fine and dandy on that visit as well. Then I go home and it park it till I try to go to work in the morning. In the morning it decides it doesnt want to start and I blow the fusible link again turning the key a bunch of times. I kept turning the key because at random the starter would engage for maybe half a second, not enough to do anything. It would do this maybe 2 out of 20 tries of the key.

Today I replaced the negative battery cable to the chassis since it looked like shit. Also cleaned up the terminals. Next I'm going to replace the positive battery terminal because it will not tighten all the way. Its still pretty snug and takes a little twisting to get off. But I'll try and replace it tomorrow.

Sorry for the novel, but anyone got any other ideas before I get a new starter?

I was thinking if it was that, then if when I hold the key in the start position and I wiggle it there should be some kind of connection. But that is not the case.

you could check to see if you have too much resistance in the positive wire from the battery to the starter or it could possibly be a short somewhere in the signal circuit of the starting system... thats if you know your starter is good

Cool, I'll check the resistance out when I change out the positive terminal today. I was just reading that a very small amount of resistance can cause this to happen.
