I just finished relocating my battery in the trunk of my vehicle. I have 2 wires coming from the battery. 1 to all my electronics and one too the starter. They both have fuses less than 12 inches from the positive terminal to the battery. So here is my problem. When i went to start my car up after the long down time to relocate the battery i noticed the battery was dead. Ok, no problem, so i go to jump start it and this is where I messed up. I hook the positive wire to the negative terminal and the negative terminal to the positive. I already checked all my electronics that where all fine including my ecu. They all seem to work great but for some reason my starter will not turn over. Could I have burnt out my starter by hooking up the terminals the wrong way when i went to jump start it? FYI both the battery and the starter where grounded to the frame.

sorry i forgot to mention that i got a new battery and all electronics in the vehicle work except for the starter. I am running out of options so i guess all i can do is replace that. My main question was can jump starting a car backwards fry a starter? This is what I think happend but I was hoping someone could tell me if this is possible first.

Did you try to spin the car with the starter hooked up backwards? If you did then you probably blew the starter and are lucky that you didn't blow every other electronic device in your car. You can try tapping the starter with a hammer while someone is holding the key in the start position, as this will sometime make the starter work, but Im not sure since it was hooked up backwards. If the hammer works, then you need a new starter. Either way, I would get a new starter, and it will probably solve your problem.

Best of luck,

Stew
