Picked up a wrecked talon tsi and all that was smashed was the hood, bumper support and radiator.

Replaced radiator and fluids...go to start her up and and the engine moves a bit then stops. The starter starts making a sort of knocking or tapping noise so i assumed it was bad and replaced it. Now the engine wont even budge and the starter keeps making wierd noises.

Any Advice?

More Info:
-Original starter's teeth were worn down
-Motor spins freely when turned by hand
-Looks like it has shep trans (chrome color)
-Removed alternator because i thought it might have seized...still wont turn

make sure the ground is attached to the bolt on the starter ,and check the negative cable.

Take starter out and test. If I remember correctly, you can hook up 12V to different parts of it to make sure it's spinning and extruding. Make sure you have the right one.

How difficult is it to turn over by hand? If it's really difficult, you can take out the spark plugs and see if there's anything on the pistons (like pieces of valves) that are preventing the starter from turning over. A longshot I know....

If the starter teeth are worn out, you should check the flywheel teeth for damage. They may be damaged enough that you will need to also replace the flywheel. Damaged flywheel teeth can also explain why a good starter is not working.
Do you have a picture of the starter? Seeing how damaged the teeth are can give us a better idea to assess the problem and help you.

You can also take the starter to a reputable part store and have it tested under load for free; no load testing will not show if the starter works under load or not.

1.check and make sure the motor and transmission are flush on all sides, maybe the accident broke one of the tranny to motor bolts,That might be why your starter is not engaging properly.

i was told that before diagnosing any no start issue, always make sure that you have a good charged battery before condemning the starter or alternator. the battery can have enough juice to turn on your accessories, but not enough to crank your starter causing a clicking noise. a good fast way to check your battery is to try starting your car with your headlights on, and if they nearly turn off when cranking the engine, your battery needs to be charged and tested.

Pull out your multimeter and get to checking. Make sure you have 12 volts at the battery. Make sure you have a good ground from the negative terminal. Check that you have 12 volts at the starter.

Is everything else working? Lights, windows, radio, seatbelts, etc. Could be a fuse or something electrical.

I would check this stuff first but like Oldsid said, it could be the flywheel since the teeth on your old starter were worn down. Verify that its not the easy stuff first, then if all else fails, flywheel.

Well i just hooked up a new optima battery+new pos/neg cables to the car and BAM! problem solved...
Just wanted to thank everyone for the quick help and advice with some pics...shes not pretty but DAMN does AWD feel better then my GST

Time to Swap in my MHI 16g!

good. now cover up those cams. i ran my car without a cam cover once and it split one of my spark plug wires. and dont forget to do preventative maintenance so u can enjoy the thrill of awd for a good while

Glad you got it fixed! :thumb:

I run with my cams open too, just make sure you route your spark plug wires out of the way and its also a good idea to secure them with a zip tie or something.

I second the preventative maintenance.
