so all the sudden the other day i went to turn my car over and it went at first but then it sounds like the starter is spinning but not hitting the teeth on the flywheel. all the teeth on the starter are fine and it feels like the flywheel teeth are fine too. should i try a new starter?

ring gears intact on the flywheel still. well actually i was driving down the road and downshifted to 2nd to take a turn some violent vibrations and the engine died then that was it! towed it home.

ya im not too happy about doin that again, had it out for a new clutch and flywheel for the last month then had it out again 2 months ago. i guess the thing in you know your a dsmer if you pull your tranny 3 times in a weekend is becoming very true

I would check to see if the rods/pistons are moving but not the timing belt by pulling the plugs and wires, crank and check for air or just look down the cylinder. If you've checked the flywheel/ring gear and know it's not spinning, and you don't have any piston movement, then you broke your crank. Check for piston movement or pull the timing cover to check physical timing (verifying crank sprocket isn't spinning) before you pull the trans. If it isn't the keyway or the ring gear you might as well just pull the motor and trans together so you can get the broken crank dealt with.

If a crank breaks, what possible damage is done to the block, if any?

Long time ago, I was a wash boy in a truck shop washing the big rigs down prior to their return to the owners.

This where I saw my first busted crank-and on these big straight six motors with journals 5 inches in diameter and one journal snapped from the rest of the crank, that is quite the nasty thing to see.

When that crank snapped as it did, it did destroy the sleeve that the piston was in along with the bearing cradles..
