Ok guys so I started the new motor, the motor started but will quickly die and sound like it's running on 3 cylinders. I am getting a cam position sensor code. The mechical timing looks to be ok although the crank mark is slightly forward of the mark maybe a centimeter. I figured this was normal as the head and block were ground down. The cams are spot on. Would mechanical timing being off cause this code? I have a new cas on the way. I'm going to replace the cas and if nothing changes I'm going to redo the timing. Any thoughts?

On one of my last motors, the timing mark on the crank was slightly off as you describe because the head was decked to hell and back. The camera angles make it look worse than it actually was. It was probably 1/16th of an inch off, if that. Enough to make me ask the same question you're asking, though:

Your timing is probably fine. Post some pics of how the marks line up.

If you got a code on a 1G, the sensor is probably trash. From what I've seen, it takes a lot to get a code with the OBD1 crap. Swap in a new CAS and you'll probably be fine.

Dude that's exactly how my timing looks.... exactly!

The motor will start but will run rough as shit and stall with that code. I flipped the cas around with no luck. When I spin the cas , the pump does prime. I just don't see how mechanical timing being off could throw that code. I even went as far as to check compression, this is a brand new cold engine I'm getting 135-145 on all cylinders. The motor hasn't even broke in yet so I'm not worried about that.

Loose injector plug or maybe the turbo is too small :)
Honestly my first thought was that my turbo was the cause. The exhaust housing restriction caused a black hole in which a gravity field shorted out my cas. The new cas will be here tues, hopefully that fixes it. I don't know what else would cause that code. I notice also that the motor won't start
Unless I pump the gas pedal. But it dies asa the code comes up.

Wiring.

The CAS may be good, but the ECU is saying the signal it's getting for the CAS is shit. Could be the sensor, but could also be the wiring. You should check both.

Yah well I have a new cas on the way, if that doesn't work I'm going to have to dive into the wiring. The only i changed in the wiring is the coolant temp sensor that has the -| looking plug came apart so I rewired it. I doubt that would of caused this issue....

I meant to ask is the icm and coil pack supposed to be grounded? I have them mounted on a plate but its not bolted to anything, just sitting next to the master?

If you asking if the coil pack is grounded through the coil bracket when bolted to the intake manifold, no, it's not.

I just realized after doing some research that there is an installation method when installing the cas, by lining up the marks and installing it at tdc. I have been just installing it randoming. I wonder if this could be a factor

There are only 2 possible orientations and I think you tried both already.

Like i said ive ran my car with it 180 out and the only thing i noticed was a hard start/ extended crank. If your getting a cam position code then most likely your sensor went bad or a wire is damaged. Have you looked over your harness? These cars are getting old and the wires become brittle

All my parts came in, I have a new cas, icm and a Sheridan 1g wire repair kit and a new cas plug n wire. So I'm ready to tackle whatever I find tmrw. I'll let u guys know how it goes tmrw

Yah guys I don't use my brain sometimes. The plugs fire twice , 1 time on each bank. I don't know why I was thinking it made that much of a differance

Replaced the cas, motor fired right up..... sounds amazing and idles perfect. Thanks for all your help guys along the way. I'm going to replace the startup oil and filter and go from there

Ok so I ran into another issue, the car runs good, I'm just hearing a strange clicking sound coming from the timing belt side , near the top, I'm gunna pull the cover off this weekend and check over everything. I got the car up to operating temperature and compression tested the motor again. I am getting 140 dead nuts on every cylinder. I'm running gsc cams.... should this concern me? I haven't driven the car yet or put it under load.

You need to properly break the motor in then do a compression test. 500mi of driving before I ever did a comp test.
