So my girl's had this weird issue since getting her back from the mechanic a couple weeks ago. I should mention that it was stored all winter, and I had the battery charged just before driving this spring.

When the engine's warm, it starts immediately...hell, catches faster than my '07 CRV. If the car's been sitting for more than a day or two, however, it cranks over pretty slow, and takes 3-4 of cranking before catching. Almost gives the impression that it WON'T start (but it always does).

Now, here's the really odd thing it does. Whenever I start it, the radio has reset itself. All of my presets are gone, the default factory sound settings are
restored. It does this EVERY time I start the car.

Also, when I insert or remove the key from the ignition, my instrument panel warning lights will dim down to nothing, and I'll hear a soft wailing coming from my Alpine alarm. After a few seconds the lights will brighten again in the dash, and the siren will stop. It's starting to do this almost every time I drive the car now. Also, there's a small switch next to my gear shift with a little red light. This starts to blink when the lights are killed.

Does it sounds like all this is tied in with my alarm somehow? Unfortunately, the original owner had all this installed, and no longer had the manual anymore. Would low battery voltage be tripping the alarm, and the radio reset? It seems like there's a parasitic draw on the battery.

Funny thing, I never had any of these issues before I brought it back from the mechanic (they resealed the engine).

Are you 100% sure about the battery. How old is it? How long did you have the car before storing it all winter? Everything is pointing to a battery on it's last legs. The other possibility is the alternator slowly draining off the charge. I had one do that to me before. I'm guessing that you visually checked all the relevant wiring under the hood after the mechanical work right?

Hmm... that's a good point. That might be the easiest and most economical place to start looking. I'll be making an appointment with the battery shop to do a system check. Wouldn't surprise me if my big-ass stereo is drawing power when the engine's off.

Glad you mentioned the alternator. I'm hearing a squeal on startup when cold. It goes away after a few seconds, but still. I'll have to check the belts...hopefully they're just a little loose.

You can check the stereo to make sure it's only powering up (that blue wire that comes with most RCA's now) when the ignition is on. Use a voltmeter to check between the acc and ground on the amplifier with the ignition off. Otherwise, there are a few recent write-ups on how to diagnose a drain from the battery. I'd recommend replacing the alternator belt vs adjusting it, chances are it's stretching and at the end of it's usable life now.

Thanks again for the help and advice. :thumb: All the belts were done when the engine was out a few weeks ago. The shop that did the work can check it out on their dime. Hope the alt isn't on the way out...

As I couldn't get the car going, I took the battery in to see what was going on. Even though it was at a full charge it was still shot. At least that seems to rule out the alternator. I'm still pretty sure I have a parasitic draw somewhere though. I'll see how the new battery goes.

I had a similar problem with a 4month old Optima Battery. The metal terminal inside the battery was broken. But bad news was with the previous owner buying the battery the warrenty didn't carry over to me, so ended up using the 4 month old Optima Battery as a core charge for a new one.

Yeah, it was definately the battery. Dropped in a new one, and all seems fine now; knock on wood. Strange thing though, when I connected the ground, there was a loud cracking sound when the cable made contact with the post. No sparks, just a crack. WTF
