hey guys.

i have a 95 eclipse GS and my car stalled three times on me today. Every time itps stalled is when i was stoping at a stop sign or red light. It didnt happen at every light, but almost. Any ideas on why it would only. stall at a stop. i recently had a exedy clutch installed and seems to be working fine. the car ides okay when i start her too..... also my speedo hasnt worked for a couple weeks (it worked before i had a valve job done)...i cant seem to find the VSS. i see everyone says its on the tranny about half way down....still can t find it. im thinking the mechanic didnt plug it back in.....

any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

Josh

Well I asked because the cel might have flashed or what not during the stalls. The keydance takes all of 30 seconds outta your life LOL. The vss is on the backside of the tranny if looking at the front of the car, aka the side against the bulkhead (firewall). It has a 3 pin connector that plugs down into it. If you remove your intake pipe, it should be rather simple to get down there.

Here's something you might find interesting...

On MY Talon, the connector to the VSS is shot. It won't stay plugged in all the way. When it comes loose, my speedo cuts out. Driving down the highway, vibrations will cause intermittent contact, resulting in my speedo going from 30 to 130mph just like a crazy man. (I wish the car was that fast! Haha!)

Ever notice (before the speedo stopped working) that the engine will sort of hang around 1500rpm when you put the clutch in to stop until the car actually stops moving? That's because the ECU uses the VSS signal to determine if the car is moving or not. On MY car, since the ECU doesn't see the VSS signal, once the engine is up to speed, every time I put the clutch in to coast up to a stop, the ECU drops the RPM all the way down to stock 750-ish. With all my headwork and cams, it's too much of a shock, the injectors flood the combustion chamber, and my engine flat stalls every single time.

Here's what I found helps to circumvent the problem until I get off my arse and solder up the new connector I've got sitting here by the computer. I will leave the car in gear as I slow for the stop. Only when the engine drops to right at 1000rpm will I push in the clutch. The engine might stumble, but it keeps me from stalling a lot.

I bet your VSS issue is partly to blame for this problem of yours. Especially if you've disconnected the battery recently. When you do that, the ECU has to re-learn it's fuel trim and you are more prone to stalling from flooding out. (I have a fully-built engine, 10.5:1CR, race port, oversized valves, Crower 2s, etc. and it is completely untuned. I have no SAFC, MSnS or anything installed. Once I've driven the car a while, the ECU is able to cope with all my mods without stalling when the VSS is connected right.)

Get a flashlight and pop that hood, boss. Remove your air intake (short ram, cai, whatever) and shine the light straight down, almost under the throttle body. You should see your rear motor mount (which actually bolts to the tranny). Right next to that is a sensor sticking straight up. It's got a single, 10mm bolt on the top. Reach in and disconnect that connector (careful, it's got one of those red, slider things you have to move before you can squeeze and pull), then undo the bolt and *gently* wiggle the sensor as you lift it straight up.

The VSS is about 3-4" long and has a free-spinning gear on the end of it. If you pull yours out and the gear is missing, you're in trouble, because that gear is now bouncing around inside your transmission, but most of the time, it's either the connector or the sensor itself that is shot.

Good luck to you, man. You can do this! :thumb:

Thanks alot DR1665...I will attempt this tonight. I believe my ecu has been reset recently, due to the clutch install I had done. I will let you guys know what I fiind out later tonight.

okay guys

just got home, and ive been looking for this damn speed sensor. still cant find it. but what i did find is two elec connectors, one of which i think belongs to the VSS. the other i have no clue and cant seem to find where it would fit. i had a valve job done over the winter and my speedo hasnt work since. if anyone could take a look at this link and let me know what these are for and exacly where they go i would really apreciate it.

thanks guys

The one on the right looks like the connector to the VSS, the one on the left (the smaller one) is from the secondary pulsed air injection system (it was only on 95s and was recalled shortly after their release). If you remove the intake, battery, battery tray and windshield wiper fluid bottle you'll have access to the VSS. Stick your hand all the way down, beneath the throttle body and feel around on top of the tranny. There will be a three prong sensor held in by one bolt. There are only two sensors in an M/T, so it's hard to misidentify -- the only other sensor is on the front of the tranny.

what should i do about the one on the left? just leave it unplugged? if anyone could post a pic of where this VSS is i would really appreciate it. ive tried looking for a while now and just cant seem to find it.

thanks for your help VelocitàPaola, i really appreciate it.

Yes, just leave the other one unplugged.

It might be easier to get to the VSS from under the car. But it looks like you just need to take more apart to get to it. It is kind of like 'Where's Waldo?' You just have to keep looking. It probably is the only sensor that is unplugged.

Good luck!

***update***

ok guys, so I finally found the damn VSS, and i plugged it in. I assembled the rest of my engine bay and took the car for a ride. The speedo now works (thank god) and i havent had a stalling issue yet. I also drove the car to work this morning and still no stalling. The car seems to be driving great. Thanks again everyone for your input and help, I knew I could count on DSMTuners.....

i just cant win with this car.....aarrrrggg well i took my lunch break today and it stalled on me twice during the 2 mile drive. again, it only stalls when im stopping. it is raining pretty bad here today, so im thinking the moisture has something to do with this. Any ideas anyone???

i thought it was too good to be true....LOL

it seems to be working fine......what should I check for?

****can someone help me locate the idle adjustment screw.....i think maybe i need to adjust that.

DO NOT MESS WITH ANY SCREWS ON THE THROTTLE BODY THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ADJUSTMENTS. You will create major problems for yourself, the PCM is programmed to fit the parameters the factory set. Is your brake pedal harder to push than normal? You might have a vacuum leak in the booster if so and it will cause a huge vacuum leak just about any time the engine is running, especially when brakes are applied.

You might check the IAC, idle air control sensor. It is on the back of the throttle body. I have heard that you can take them out and clean them and hopefully they work better. You can search for it in the forum or also the ISC, that is what is on the 4g63, but they do the same thing for the cars.

It might be something to look into.
